At one time the US had the 40mm M397A1 HE Airburst round for the M79/M203 that performed in a similar way.
And that sounds really interesting. I would have liked to have had one or two while I was deployed. Too bad.

Check out the M684 ... 40mm fragmention grenade with electronic-proximity fuse.
Kinda hard to imagine this thing working accuratly, but it should detonate when it finds a charaterstic radio-reflection in range. Handy against fortified positions without hard topping (sandsack barriers ,trenches etc.).
