I hate posting in here, everyone is so epic at modelling, and then I post a piece of **** :P

Okay, so my first ever UV and Texture for a model. Im happy with it but of course I know its no where near a standard for a mod/game :P

Image

And a little something for a Indie Game im working on, well, currently in concept stages but w/e lol

(I accidentally saved the render early, which is why it cuts off, but there isnt actually anything at the bottom)

Nice work Tom, good to see you get them all sorted :D

@WMD, looks all right tbh for a low poly model, although I would add more sides to your tower and the cannons, ladder etc look a little high poly in comparison and I would look into using more normal maps on them :)
Also shouldn't the cannon be on wheels so they can be pushed back after firing? That's if they don't fall down the hole :p

@WelshManDan
Gotta say that i am impressed by that texture being your first, any chance we can see the uv sheet ?

Critique wise there are however a few things you need to think about and it is mostly to do with material definition and edge wear (placement is rather good, but the brush quite honestly looks bad) :)
A way to improve in those aspects would be to watch this tut Next-Gen Hard Surface - Racer445 Tutorial

Be aware however that there a quite a few things you have probably have not been introduced to yet, so it might be a big mouthfull. But it introduces you to thinking materials through before making them.
This has personally helped me a lot.

Behold! I win in worst [WIP] model posted thus far!

(Also my first model but yeah it's freaking hard to get stuff, I can see why I gave up in the past!)

This:

Much work to go... but thankfully I've got this far in only a day of tearing my hair out with 3dsmax... hopefully there'll be rapid productivity gains in the weeks to come! :o

Once I'm done with the lowish poly (aiming for LOD0 = ~150-200 max) I'll try my hand at one with an open garage door as an alternate.

Good luck with trying to learn it :) takes a while to get into.

However what is happening at the top of your static, seems like you have some double edges. one of the things that happens the most for novice modellers is that you have double verts and whatnot. you need to be aware of this problem and counter it as early as possible. also everything should be build from quads/tris (polygons made of 3-4 verts) or you are going to hit all kinds of problems while building :)

If your crating some of the stuff I requested in this post, its pretty nice, but remmeber a long foundation wall so its easier to place stuff in slopes.. But about the model: looks like its taking shape ;-) keep it up, I wanna see more stuff from you in the future. Remmber that it dosent have to be enterable, enterable statics rapes the preformance

Thanks for the advice. I've taken that on board and made sure every poly has a maximum of 4 verts of which it comprises.

I struggled a little with making the base 'nice' because a garage on a hill would always have a rampy-thingo up so I tried to put a simple one on but I'm not sure where to go with it. Will leave it for now as it's of minor importance.

A bit of progress today:

Image

Then the base at work with an angle. Having the door on the side is proving to be a hindrance since it means the terrain can't be angled too far away on that side. I'm considering either widening the model and making the door on the front with the garage door (strange?) or getting rid of the door altogether.

Image

I think I'm gonna start my own generic progress thread so I don't spam up this one.

Have a finished Lav25 and M1A1 AIM abrams if you're interested. Just the 2 aren't textured.
