Make/use a map like the Test Airfield or Wake Island and put this beast on it and you're good to go.

An interesting model would be an AC-130 type gunship platform, but in Chinook form. Which is to say, just put a ton of M134s on the side, or possibly some Mk19s.
ACH-47A, anybody?

lies, it was awesome, and in fact would be perfect for the vietnam mod, ia drang is too small with too short a draw distance for the skyraider..
6 m2s, grenade launcher and a rocket pod, how could it be stopped?

A Chinook has a much higher top speed than an Apache

Around 300+ km/h, not that slow tbh
(unless you're talking about the Vietnam variant, but I don't know the topspeed of that one)

Ive been told that the Medvac Chinooks have at times got to make a hard choice between going slow for the Apaches or going fast but having no cover for extract.

That's true, all the documentaries featuring the air support in Afghanistan mention that the Apaches are never able to keep up with the Chinooks. Besides the basic better performance, the two rotors also make it less prone to the harsh conditions than the Apache.

At the moment the USMC are trying to solve the V-22 escort problem with a an armed version of the V-22 but don't think its working out too well

Wasn't the V-22 originally designed to be armed with a single MG turret in the front lower nose section? And then that was removed?
