Okay, it's really depends on the surface.

Sand: Quiet Footsteps and equipment.
Grass: Quiet Footsteps and loud equipment.
Stone: Loud Footsteps and equipment.
Woods: You hear every little broken stick or rustling foliage far away.

Well what isn't realistic to me is, you could be crouching by a corner, or proning on a rooftop, and some guy manages to get with 2 feet of you before you can hear him! It happens all the time, sound is pretty much useless for figuring out where enemies are.

Then you take an old game like Urban Terror, and sound is so vital, you can hear guys jumping around or running, breathing, etc. It's way cooler, and more realistic.

Yeah I agree, footsteps in this game are pretty quiet. A guy wearing that much gear should make more noise.

i'm not so sure... some times when i'm away from the fighting.. i'm like sundenly hear someone running... i check my mini map and the noise is coming from a 'bluey' that i would of thought was at least 40m away.
I could well be mistaken. In the battle zone things can get distorted.

How about reducing the Radio sounds? Maybe that'll help.

Can't wait for 0.6!

IF only the sound quality was as clear and intense as this:

http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=22913 (use headphones)

But it'd no doubt need to be coded into the engine and takes a lot of work.

That is a binaural recording mate. There are several reasons as to why you couldn't use those in a game.

1. It's recorded using a binaural head microphone, which is a replica of a human head (made with foam I think). I don't think any of the PR sounds we have are recorded by one.

2. Even if we had binaural recordings, it wouldn't matter. The reason it sounds so good in that link is because they're physically moving around the binaural mic in realtime. In BF2 when someone is shooting around you it's just a mono audio file being panned according to where the shooter is.

Interesting Solo, I have some 5.1 surround zalman headphones that I'll have to try...they are OK but little bass. It so hard to leave the nice Logitec THX 5.1 with a thumping subwoofer every time someone shoots :)

those 5.1 headphones sound like a tin can is strapped to your head.

i have Bose QC2s and i hear everything every where without problems. from .4 to .5 they definently turned down the footsteps though for .5
a great sound card and great headphones are a big difference from a good sound card and good headphones.
