True, clans and tournaments require commitment. That does not necessarily mean spending more time playing though - just spending it better. If you give up public play you could easily participate in several clans as still spend less time playing overall. Joining a clan or tournament is no different from playing soccer in the local club where you are expected to attend as well.
I do not think, however, that finding a clan that plays when you want to play is a big issue - just hook up with somebody in your timezone. People mostly want to play in the evening. Even with the tournaments with participants from all over the world the battle times are reasonable for most players (though they do tend to favour the Americans who are almost always hosting).
