Not really feeling this idea. There's hardly any point to it. The choppers can get around the map fairly quickly, and heading back to main base is something the helicopter pilots should do after sustaining heavy damage.

The suggestion makes the commander's role play out more and more like an RTS game, you want the CO to deploy entire bases? Maybe even add a "harvest" kit so that players can go gather oil, which would give your team more tickects or something. Seriously though, at best I like the current system as is. The helipads, runways should be placed at the mapper's choice. Now... maybe the helipads and such could be destroyable... but not every map has it's choppers on helipads. I think a better idea would be to have the heli and jet spawns rely on an active command post. Destroying that will stop helicopters and jets from spawning in or something.

Wouldn't even have to be a real helipad, just something to represent a couple of guys digging for a while, flattening an area. Just have people shovel it, but make it take as long, or longer, as a bunker/firebase, and if possible give it a minimum people requirement of 3. How unrealistic is it to prep a zone for helicopter landing? Of course, make it impossible to build it outside a certain range from a capped flag.

Quite unrealistic. Unless the helicopter was coming in with precious cargo then there really is no need to prep a landing zone. You find a relatively flat area of land, call the chopper for a pick-up, deploy some smoke, cover the landing zone.

Well, in reality, chopters do manage to land on a surface that isn't nearly 100% flat. And yes, I know, hover. I do prefer sitting safely on the ground while I'm waiting for the cargo to board.

Not to mention, it looks unrealistic to have commanders deploying helipads on the side of mountains, on top of buildings, in the middle of the roads, in the middle of the city etc.. The current system works fine. If you need a lift, find some relatively flat land, the chopper should come in and hover over the ground and the players jump in. If the heli needs repairs or ammunition, it flies back to main base.

Also when you do manage to damage a helicopter and it pulls off, you want it to head back to main base, as it may buy your team a minute or so before it comes back. You don't want it flying behind a treeline, and popping back up a few seconds later ready to rape and burn.

would it be possable to not have helo support on a map untill a Farp is deployed by the commander?

What's the point of that? The operation base thingy is where the helicopters are repaired and maintained, not some landing pad in a ditch all by itself behind enemy lines.

This suggestion is quite unrealistic cause when you want to re-arm ya helo, there have to be ammo on the ground, which requires that the ammo is transported to this helopad and its also good for the gameplay not to realize this suggestion, cause a good pilot-gunner-team is extremely lethal ... imagine what will happen when such a helo could be re-armed near the battlezone ... thats pure poison for the gameplay.

In a game you have to include also the gameplay-factor ... and the actual system is perfect but thats my opinion. ;-)

Well, it doesn't have to rearm or repair, just the simple landing pad would be nice. And you're going to need a commander, plus a truck, plus at least three people (if it can be coded), to build this, so having this built on a steep slope or something might be hard. Nevermind that that might not be an easy place to land, even with an LZ.

Yes but.... what is the point in it then?

Its 5 seconds to the nearest airbase (not including the Kashan map)

dunehunter to land a chopper is not hard, just point the node to the ground short time before the impact drag or push (dont know your settings) your mouse so that the nose points up und then press "s" when you are on the ground dont press "s" further thats it and you dont need to find a surface which is 100% flat, you can hover at a very low altitude!

I'm sorry, but did you read my earlier posts? I mentioned knowing that you can just hover for a while, but that that can be an annoyance while you are waiting for the cargo to get in, especially with a chopper like the cow or the merlin, where they all have to get in the back.

Jump towards the door and press E.

No? You serious? How about posting something constructive?

I know that you just have to jump towards the door and press E, but that doesn't mean that everyone on the ground gets that instantaneously.

Hows is that not constructive? You want to start a flame war? Maybe the people you're talking about are reading that post right now, how about that?

I didn't see what I typed as being offensive, if it is, I apologize for it. I simply pointed out that I had tried to adress his concern in an earlier post, then did a quick recap of it. Also, I don't really see how that connects to what you posted. And no, I don't want to start a flamewar.

Well I do!

j/k

I thought that using sarcasm is the same as being a smart ***.

Seriously though, what's the point in having one then? If it can't re-arm/repair and it's built on flat land, what's the point?

Maybe it's another cry for help, because he can't fly?

The main base with a reparing helipad is less than 30 seconds away, unlike RL, where its maybe 15 minutes.
