In addition, being in the MG on the top of the tank makes you a lovely target for enemy tanks, snipers, spec forces and engineers. You die if anything explosive hits the tank and you die if the tank stops still to hit someone. Which is fine if it's some pudknocker who just clambered in, but kinda annoying when it's your squad leader...

And ducking doesnt really help much, its safer, but not totally safe..

And you can't operate your map, squad screen etc whilst you're crouched down - at least, not without popping back up. So for a SL, crouching doesn't solve much.
