That's not the video Tacamo was referring to. Depicted in that video is a GAU-19 (aka GECAL .50) .50 cal BMG minigun, which is sometimes mounted on helicopters. The one briefly seen in a video of Army Special Forces in Iraq was an M134 7.62mm NATO minigun mounted on a HMMWV.

Personally, I think it started out as a joke since they're still huge. However, the M134 miniguns were based on Vulcan 20mm electrically operated rotary cannons (the type used on most US fighter aircraft and in ground mounts). They were simply known as "the gun" of the aircraft. I believe that's where the name comes from; since they were smaller scale versions of Vulcans, they were "mini guns." Now the term has come to mean any electrically operated, multiple barreled, rotary machinegun. Note the machinegun distinction; if it fires 20mm or greater caliber round, it is termed a rotary cannon.
