I support removing all markers except squad members.

It means teams will be forced to communicate via chat to know where each squad is attacking, and also makes it more fun when doing things like extractions... "Approaching B4 now, Squad 2... Are those bodi-" *BOOM* Ambush ;)

Absolutely not.
i spoke for removal of minimap in advance, but this would be overdoing it.
On the opposite, i would like squadmembers even being able to (ghost)spot for their squad, while only SL spot for team.

yes... and no.... I cant DECIDE!!!! For me you could remove it but... as okita and terranova said commander should be able to see all his team. Furthermore SL should see only SL of other teams and everyone from the squad 1 sees everyone from a squad 1.

Or SL sees everyone as well but for example spec ops and sniper sees SL's of other squads as well.

As for complete removal Im for NO!!! I usually play with squads that are using voip a lot keeping together and most of the time can see each other, but as other said there are times when you just need to know...

Communication on the battlefield involves more than simply one person. Radio communication between Squads in a Platoon or Platoons in a Company happen through a dispatch or through GPS location. It is through these means that a Company Commander may know where his troops are on the field and by the wonders of modern technology so would the Battalion commander and on up the line. Command center is staffed with numbers of people all tracking troop movement, enemy location and the such. Having a single CO coordinate all of this by themselves in the game would mean constant chatter on the radio and superb teamwork on the part of the team. i.e. this would only work on a closed private server with private members who understand how it works. "Commander Squad 2. Sighting troops from my position NNW. Identify. - Squad 2, Comm. No friendlies at those coordinates. Engage at will." Also I would have to request a map distance key so that distance to friendlies could also be said. Any server open to the public would be horrible with this sort of thing.

Is it realistic? Overly so.
Do I think it would be neat to attempt? Sure.
Do I think it would work. Absolutely not.

The general PR public just doesn't have the teamwork, communication skills and coordination for this to really work. At least not in my opinion.

I use the blue mob to indicate the situation, so please keep solo spec ops and snipers visible to everyone, so I know when they get killed and there's an enemy coming, while they type "omfgzorz, i haz een pwned but a r teh sniperz, dis sux"

:p

i like this idea.. but then we would need to add zoom to the map.. or smaller grid on the map.. so it would be easier to determine location :)

Agreed 100%, please make this happen! :( Forget the nay-sayers! 8-) Seriously, I don't think the goal of this mod is to be mainstream and make those people like it. This is simply how it should be even if most of the current community disagrees.

No need for that, really. Since BF2 is located slightly in the future, we can simply assume that each soldiers has a little PDA with him, that transmits regularly (continusouly?) it's position to the "Friendly Forces Locator Network" that every soldier can access with his PDA.
This is even possible with current technology, so let's leave it at that.

i can now imagine the increased teamkilling now that you have no idea where your enemies or your friends are.

this is more of a game design issue than a realism one, the game just wouldnt work if nobody knows where anyone else is.

You are absolutely right. The actual battlefield technology currently exists. Check out this link to a Future Weapons episode. Apparently, it's not all that unrealistic to see the location of other soldiers on a GPS HUD.

Its unrealistic to think that would work well, especialy on public servers. Imagine an A10 pilot not knowing where anything is. The SL -> CO -> SL communication doesnt always work perfect on public servers. Seriously, it would ruin the fun.

Oh no you didn't......

You did....

Future weapons posts on PR are like using Star Wars as support for RL. ;)

not as extreme, but really...

I'm not saying that Future Weapons is not the most reliable source of information, but do you think they're just making this stuff up? I'd take it all with a grain of salt, but I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.

Also, are you trying to say that Star Wars isn't realistic? I would have to argue with you on that point, my friend. ;)

Heheh, nooo no... Star Wars is...the most realistic universe ever, in fact, its where PR is headed eventually[.8 or .9 probably] ;)

Personnally I'd like to see some laser guns, an X-wing, and maybe an Ewok or two. I think it would really spice things up. Totally realistic. We already had the Star Wars music on the suicide cars in .6, why not take it to the next level?

Heh, Im sorry, Im responsible for the offtopicness :)

to get back on track:
I am severely opposed to removing ALL markers. Im somewhat, maybe, almost, for removing all bu your squad, and leaving everyone on the map for the commander...

There are too many difficulties that come with a game to be able to do that, as cool as it might be in theory. Lack of resolution/easy identification, lack of communication[no matter how much there is] blah blah blah :)
