I've seen several different variations in how mortars are implemented in to multiplayer shooters and there are always sacrifices.

Realistically the mortar team would set the range and angles, but unless there was someone to spot, and spot accurately (depending on how ammo works w/ mortars, if the spotter just says left or right then by the time the mortar is on target either there's no one to shoot or ammo is gone), there would be major issues in the kind of teamwork required for this weapon. Upside: accuracy. Downside: requires proficient teamwork and spotting.

I've seen games give the mortar man a "map" to place a reticle over. To balance for this, typically the farther out the target the less accurate the mortar will fire, and will land anywhere within an increasingly large radius. This is good for aiming quickly, but also kind of a waste of mortar ammo if it is unlikely that any shots at range are going to hit where you want on the first few shots.

I've always thought a realistic mortar would be really cool, but it would only be effective with a mortar team that really has practiced (preferably together) on the weapon. The spotter has to direct fire (maybe he can have a laser range fire, but he has to keep in mind where he is in relation to the mortar), and the mortar operator has to have a means of knowing his distance to the target (A more accurate map grid for instance). But, I think all of this is just too much to handle for the devs, and a game that does not already have anything in place to handle this kind of weapon.

*hey, this thread just morphed from a "will they..." thread into a "why they should/ shouldn't/ didn't/ wouldn't..." thread. I don't see that as being too far a stretch from the original topic. Some of us care just as much about the "why" as the "will".
So give them all Self Propelled Artillery Guns, have those guns be able to get reference points from GLTDs and have it it. You don't need to worry about mortars being too mobile, because it's mounted on a vehicle, sure people would use it as an anti tank gun on occasion, but that's not unrealistic.

Allright, so they are not being implemented? I was thinking Mortars, we should wait and see if we get the 114 player servers. Cause that is alot of work, and if it doesnt work, well then who cares.

Im talking about the USMC now, not the army, everyone with me?

Our current Light AT for USMC is the AT-4.

Our current Heavy AT for USMC is the The Predator SRAW

Automatic Rifleman is the SAW short for Squad Automatic Weapon

What im getting is that we are able to implement more correct weapons for the faction.

Suppressive fire is provided by the M249 SAW and M240G machine guns, at the squad and company levels respectively.

(Source Wikipedia)

If i am not wrong you should be able to add the M240G like sniper rifles, 1-2 per team. As a heavy rifleman or something similar.

Im thinking that PR wants to stay as realistic as possible, and as close to their reallife counterparts as possible. So thats why im wondering if it is possible to add these weapons or not?

And if we can add the Javelin?

Is it possible or not?

also! Dont forget PR is set slightly in the future. So maybe were just playing in the period where the marines are transfering Heavy Riflemans. They are not using M240G's and there next gun is still in production because there was a critical error discovered and the taliban bombed one of there biggest factory's so theres to few machineguns to hand out.

lol at marines transferring :)

And rudd sorry, my main aim (although i didnt post it) was to see if the Devs wanted full realism for all factions, and i was just wondering if i was highligting something "already known and wont be implemented", or "Thanks Wicca didnt think of that"

Cause f.ex. the MEC is not a realistic army, it doesnt exist, the "war" between US/Brits and MEC has never existed, but the war US/Brits VS Iraq, has occured.

So i was just wondering if we would want "TOTAL REALISM" or "realism with a touch of Fiction" ?

Cause i want to make a map, but the war is fictional. Thats why i posted this. Next time i wont post a thread like this, but i will contact a DEV through PMS :D

Anywho, does anyone have the answer to this? ^^

British equivalent (GPMG) is on the Landrover. Though making an improved version of that along with an M240 is being discussed.

Shoulder-launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon

Was in-game but got removed in favour of the AT-4

M2 Browning machine gun

In game right now
Hopefully that clears things up.

Predator SRAW should go, and we've been working on that, but there is nothing incorrect about the AT4/M136 or SAW (Automatic Rifleman is the position in the fire-team of the Marine or Soldier who carries the SAW).

And once again, these have all been suggested before. Please use the search function in the future. :)
