Yes, it would effect squad play a great deal. But, in "reality" you can't spawn on a squad leader :)

As for squads, on most servers (even PR ones) it's hard to get people to work as squads and not just hop around :)

If you've got a good squad (that isn't all assault/support/spec ops), then the medics should take care of you if you stick with them.

The 45 second spawntime, don't forget, is also a huge penalty on the team, and so it changes the gameplay dynamics. With 45 seconds to wait, it is very easy for half-3/4 of your team to be dead at a time, leaving bases open.

Oh, and if you take out the feature of spawning on your SL, you can pretty much kiss any advanced teamwork goodbye. Nobody would stick together.

Hell, it's hard enough to get people to wait an extra 10 seconds so they can spawn on the SL for the sake of keeping the squad together and in sync (a good squad should usually die at the same time-- that shows that if the whole squad isn't wiped, the remaining guy can pick up the medic's kit and revive everybody, starting with the leader).

Besides, I've found it pays to wait to spawn on the SL anyways, because when you do spawn, you have a longer life expectancy than if you're doing your own thing (added protection of your teammates, plus having a medic who gives a damn).
