Re: Random crashes in-game
You have to make sure that there is a space between pr.exe" and start +... or else it thinks its the file directory hope this helps.theiceman wrote:i changed it so my target window reads, "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe"start +modPath mods/pr +menu 1 +fullscreen 1

And looks like re-running both patches and adding affinity and turning it down to medium graphics wise has solved it for me so far *fingers crossed* thankies all for patience and efforts
Cheers, Kirk
UPDATE: I think what could be a possible cause is the 1.5 alt-tab hotfix, I was fine yesterday but the CTD's reoccured again today after I downloaded the hotfix, So I have re-run the patches

Re: Random crashes in-game
Eenis,
Some other things you can try before you uninstall/reinstall.
Backup your BF2 folder that's inside your documents folder.
Once you have a backup delete the original from your documents folder.
Try starting PR from your PR shortcut.
A new default folder is created.
Link to your online account.
If all goes well (CTD gone) all you have to do to get your custom settings back is copy your 'control' file from your backup to the new profile folder.
path:
C:\Users\your user name here\Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0002
note: you may not have a 0002 folder so use 0001
(choose the highest # folder, It is usually your currant profile folder)
Have you changed anything on your PC?

Re: Random crashes in-game
Hi,
I have been having massive amounts of Random Crashing in Vista x64 since the 1.5 patch and .87.
After tons of tinkering and debugging -
Turn off Anti-Aliasing!! No more crashes! I was able to reproduce this on several devices using different types of hardware etc. Ran IDA Pro on a few DLL's and system API's and all pointed to the anti aliasing function calls to the cards (ATI - Nvidia). Please try and let me know.
Thanks,
Main Hardware Specs:
Vista x64
Intel Q9450
EVGA 780i SLI
8 gig Ram
9800GX2 - 1920x1200 32bit
2 x Dell 2407 WFP
4 x OCZ Vertex SSD2 120G

Re: Random crashes in-game
I suffer from this problem as well. Turning textures to medium and texture filtering to medium seemed to make them happen less frequently, but 1 CTD is too frequent for me
Right now it looks like we have two possible culprits, the alt-tab fix, or anti-aliasing.
Can anyone confirm one of these? If so, can I turn textures back up? I wish there was a way to benchmark, but the problem with random CTDs is they're random.

Re: Random crashes in-game
You forgot the EA Download Manager issue.
Another fix to try when having random crash to desktop issues when using the downloaded version of BF2
And textures seems to be an issue just with Vista.

The Fix you quoted above is prior to 1.5 patch release. The 1.5 includes the .exe fix for larger memory addressing.'[R-COM wrote:thepalerider;1159157']You forgot the EA Download Manager issue.

I am almost inclined to think that the 1.5 adjusted the streaming of the textures to a more aggressive mode.

Re: Random crashes in-game
The fix is about not using the 'EA Download Manager' and as a side benefit using the 'unlocked' BF2.exe that can use more than 2 gig of ram and as noted in red at the top of the post that part is no longer needed since the 1.5 patch.
The issue seems to be with the EA Download Manager, which is required to play the virtual version from the EA Store. The ONLY difference between the downloaded version and the CD/DVD version is the BF2.exe which is found at C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe
Getting rid of the EA Download Manager stops random CTD for some is what I was trying to say. To do so you may need to use the BF2.exe from the CD/DVD version. You don't have to use the unlocked version (all tho I don't think it will hurt anything if you do) as patching with 1.5 will unlock it anyway.

Re: Random crashes in-game
Eenis that seems like a separate issue as you actually get an error. What I think people are getting here is a crash to the desktop with no indication that anything had gone wrong.
Also, I have the DVD version of BF2 and installed off that. I have not used anything to download the game.

Some other possible suspects :
Mumble
Widescreen fixer
xfire
Fraps
bad or miss-matched ram

Re: Random crashes in-game
palerider, I can't speak for others, but I had a suspicion of all of these.
I have gotten CTDs running neither widscreen fixer, mumble, xfire, nor fraps (none of them were running and still got CTD).
As for miss-matched or bad RAM, my RAM came together in a set, and I have run full coverage on all 4gb with two instances of MemTest.
Isn't the fact that reducing the texture settings makes it slightly better a hint at the problem? Like maybe it's some sort of graphics thing? I also seem to get it on maps where I can see a lot more, such as large desert maps or that map with the Dam. Although, this could be coincidence.
