You can't aim it without an active fire mission but when one is called it's active for 3 minutes and can be called in again straight away if needed. Without one, the black screen is an analogy of the CO knocking you out for firing indirectly without a fire mission :p

Of course, medium mortars are known to fire direct in defensive situations without a fire mission irl, but there's still either a close-by observer or the leader of the squad itself doing directing.

Good. Problem is now mortar crews will get frustrated when the SL's calling it in can't place the marker properly, just like CAS markers :razz:
