Do you mean in real-life or in-game?
this is a realism mod, so the in-game, didn't will be the same of the rea life????
Yes, as much as we can.
It used to be that Army tankers all carried sidearms (M9) and that there was one M16 rifle per 4-man tank crew. With the introduction of the M4, this has changed, since it is easier to stow because of its shorter barrel length and collapsing stock. About 2-3 men per crew now carry M4 carbines in addition to or in lew of sidearms. A few grenades may be carried as well. The primary weapon might be randomized.
What may be possible in game is that a tank crewman may have a tool like the Engineer that will only fix tanks/tracked vehicles.
Army Bradley and Marine LAV crewmen have infantry MOS (or Cavalry Scout MOS 19D in the Army) and are normally issued rifles.

Perhaps just make the engineer the tanker class?

A combat engineer is not a tanker.
Combat engineer doesn't know how to drive a tank, first of all, and they are equipped like regular infantry with body armor and weapons, and they also have can have c4,c2, and probably myriads of other explosive devices.
tankers drive tanks, and have an m4 (well something like that), the tanker helmet thingy, i don't think they have body armor.

...But the problem in BF 2 is that because tanks will be quite rare and very easily destroyed in the PR Mod, It makes the tanker class very redundant.
Unlike the pilot: I cannot see this one benifiting playing experiance.

solo said it all, you wont see anymore lone wolf tanks. they'll be implemented in squads with (if teamwork prevails) good infantry cover.
both pilots and tankers are badly needed.

based on some inferences by some devs it seems like they still want to gear maps towards specific units, if this is the case i dont think youll need to worry about this, in a Paras' map or an 82AB map youll have all paratrooper classes, in a 1st Armored map youll have alot of tanker class or two along with an Mechanised infantry classes, i guess a pilot class would be the one thing left out as hopefully there wont be to many ALL air maps (its always nice to have a Battle of Britain or No Fly Zone tho)
if hope im correct in my inferences .....
