As others have long pointed in the months that this discussion has been going on, there are better ways of implementing spotting than a magic minimap - it's almost like so many people have only played a computer game for the first time with BF2....
My preference in the absence of useful hand signals ingame or in any game for that matter is something similar to the Operation Flashpoint method - where a target spotted is enclosed in white brackets to simulate it being physically pointed out by a squaddie for the squad members to see with a voice over of '3 o'clock, bmp, 1000' for those facing the wrong direction.
Simple, elegant, effective. And gaydar-free.
