Speaking from experience here as well, hehe

Go with simple rolling hills and a few villages or something. BUT, whatever you choose, stick with it and dont give up. Thats the reason why 80% of the maps started never get done... people give up.
ye i gave up my first city map after i have been working it on about 6 months...shame i never got it running ingame :( that sure was frustrating but i learned alot from it ...my 2nd map was ambush where i learned even more...especially about what makes a map really nice...and now im off to airborne which will be better than muttrah 2.... :D

JOKING DUDES!

*EDIT : @ black-wolf : concerning your textures : generate lowdetailtextures:
how to ?
-klick on each layer and set the lowdetail tpye(tweakerbar) to " 1 " for normal textures and to " 2 " for mountain textures
- after each type you have to klick "set lowdetailtexture" (bottom right) and choose the only file available in the appearing list
- after you have done that with every of your layers klick "generate lowdetailtextures" and your texture should look better :)

There's actually almost one for every vBF2 map, but you need to get those put in manually from each map folder... that comes much later as its only pretty subtle changes, although it is pretty noticeable as you cycle through them :P

[just learned that myself a few days ago from Ranky]

Heres a link to a zip with all the bf2 lowdetail textures. They do make a big difference and the best one will depend on your map colours/settings etc. To choose the best one, choose and area of your map with pretty much one colour and then play with the tiling and low detail textures until you lose the repeating patterns on the textures.

Heh, thanks[marco]. I swear I had it earlier, but I think it got put back under as a thread was cleared[faces of PR or something maybe]
hehe

Im busy dl'ing and uploading other stuff ATM, but later tonight Ill upload the zip file of all the low detail textures. When you get them you just put it into this folder:
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\bf2editor\RawData\Common\Terrain\Textures\LowDetail
So that within the "lowdetail" folder you will have a folder for each map, etc. Itll make sense once I upload...
youll have the default:
bf2editor\RawData\Common\Terrain\Textures\LowDetail\lowdetailtexture.dds

and then a ton of folders for each map that has a texture...
bf2editor\RawData\Common\Terrain\Textures\LowDetail\Masthuur
bf2editor\RawData\Common\Terrain\Textures\LowDetail\Jalalabad
bf2editor\RawData\Common\Terrain\Textures\LowDetail\Karkand
etc etc etc

I just overexplained that a million times... will update with the zip later though. :P

Woohoo!

BTW - when I said look at a plain area of map - you need to be at a far distance to see the repeating patterns on the textures. I found highway tampa to be best for my map, despite it being mountainous woodland!
