Financing is a dilemma, many wouldn't be happy with subscription or DLC.
ANDROMEDA wrote:Although what was so difficult to pay for 1 or 2 updates a year?
It's not exceptionally difficult, it just isn't an attractive option for some. Hence why DLC can segment the community and result in underpopulated servers.
ANDROMEDA wrote:And look in the PR browser. Is there a lot of servers of 0.7 or 0.8 version??
Free patches for a mod is a different matter to purchased DLC for a retail game.

You are right, many people wouldn't be happy or comfortable with a subscription service. I don't know where I stand, I've never signed up for one in the past, but this might be the first to convince me. But honestly, I'd rather just pay $50 for the game and not have to worry about a subscription.

If you don't charge for updates, how would the Devs continue development of new DLC. Right now they continue to update the mod out of their love for it, but love doesn't pay the bills thus a lot of game companies don't bother to update their games. How would this be handled then? Regulate the updates to once every few years?

Read the PR2 FAQ. No decision has been made about what license model to use for PR2, so any discussion about it at this point is pretty meaningless.

I know I wouldn't pay for subscription for an FPS, thats why CoD: Vietnam is going to suck bigtime.

I'd pay $100 max for PR in a lump sum though.

What about advertising? They can put 24x128 ads in the loading screens, intro, or in the game play : The corner houses can have McDonalds counters and the bigM, the gas stations can have huge Shell signs.

Ads can get around the pain of subscriptions and while they're still annoying they are the lesser evil. Furthermore, the ads in the maps can be simplly called realism, there are McDonalds in Iraq, vanilla BF2 Tampa has intel-ads.

But this might require the Devs to get their own game engine, or arrange a mod-expansion pack deal with EA (I hate EA!), the problem with the mod is that we are already playing the mod free and it would feel cheapening.

Stop complaining, we all know well get PR2 irregardless(unless you are too young to have a credit card, and your mom and dad wont let you play through theirs, at which point you shouldn't be playing PR full stop.)

Not complaining, more discussing the financial situation respective to PR. Advertisements would be a good idea but not that many people play or are too smart to simply not pay attention to it.

Also please don't say irregardless.

Yeah, and the problem goes out to the fact that PR is a niche-shooter, not many people would play it as opposed to general shooters like COD2 and with the amount of contributers working on PR it would be hard to pay them on a real salary.

Furthermore they would loss all of their volunteers, people don't like to volunteer for other people's profit and the volunteers are the backbone of the PR development. Also, it would turn a leisurely hobby into work for all the contributors, people would feel differently about work, some people hate work, some people don't work(which is probably why they're playing PR)

I seriously doubt PR would lose a lot of their volunteers -- I'm quite certain that a profit-sharing agreement or free copies of the game or some such could be done to compensate many people for their time, if it came to that.

I don't believe any member of the PR team is looking to PR2 to be their full-time job, although perhaps I'm misled there. This isn't a get rich quick scheme, paying for it is just a method to make it possible for people to actually spend enough time working on the game, and get access to the tools needed to create the game.

I know there hasn't been anything set in stone about the Business Model for PR2, initially we were just discussing different methods of payment, but there seems to be a lot of people that are confused and thinking that it is set a certain way.

I don't think you fully understand that we are talking about PR2 here and that the Devs already have their own game engine, they have purchased developer licenses for the C4 engine, and that may or may not even happen. Go read the FAQ.

Alright, I've had enough. Most of the ones in here that are here bickering about the possible models or methods of payment for PR are forum members who haven't even donated at this point. Listening to you guys whine and complain and say that it should be like this or like that, yet you haven't even donated like $10 to support the hard work of the Devs makes it hard to take anything you guys say seriously. It's like all the people who cry out publicly about politics and the government, then don't go vote when elections come around.

You're trolling, right?

We are completely fine to discuss this, ones doesn't have to be involved directly to have an opinion or an open discussion.

By your logic since we don't help develop PR by adding content, we have no right to give feedback or better ideas do we?

I said it before and I'll say it again, mark my words,

Battlefield 3 will = BF2 Project Reality + (hopefully) pimped HL2 statics engine (for amazing glass, water and explosion elements physics)

It will be called Battlefield 3 : REAlitEA! lol with a tm on both EA

-----

Ok ok im high, but thats what happened to Desert Combat, and frankly, before discovering PR, I was still playing Desert combat instead of vanilla bf2.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That being said, If the PR devs would love financement for their very own engine build up, I'd say there are quite alot of possibilities with the traffic you are creating already :) Marketing is the key here for sure.

PR is the best answer to many gamers since GTA in 3d environment. lol.(remember thinking how cool it would be to have this little overview game turn into 3d? It did and became the biggest video game icon)
