3ds Max Resources | Free Online 3ds Max tutorials

Use that series of tutorials - it teaches all the basics in a very understandable way and most importantly (and unusaully) it doesn't presume any previous experience.

The learning curve is very steep - especially doing it on your own with only the net to help, but after say 20 - 30 hours you'll suddenly reach a point where everything falls into place.

Seriously, if people want to learn they should at least know how to type in "modeling tutorial" in google or youtube.

There are literally hundreds of sites out there dedicated to 3D, some of them only on game art. Google links to millions of tutorials and youtube has thousands of beginner tutorials that show all the basics in videos...

I know it might come off a bit hard but that is the way I started, and within a few days and sticking to some tutorials you are already well on your way. If we had to gather up all the necessary tutorials for modeling/UVing/texturing here - we would be at the same level as the dedicated 3d sites.

If people want to learn this complex trade they should at least be proactive enough to give it a google to see what is what and not expect us to have it served on a silver plate for them.

Again sorry for my attitude.

The problem with google is that people there are SOOO many tuts out there and it can be very difficult to sort the good from the bad. Additionally it is very likely you will learn things that should NOT be done if you are moddeling for bf2 (Especially when it comes to skinning)

Quantity isn't always a good thing. Sorting the good from the bad can be just as much of an issue as finding it in the first place. Oftentimes it takes a trained eye to recognize what tutorials are teaching things the right way and which are teaching the wrong way.

The is currently no list compiled of modeling tutorials for BF2. If someone knows of such a list please link it. Any useful tut you find is likely one of the following

-Sorted amongst many other useless tuts
-Not or only partially useful for BF2

I think it is a bit unfair to say learning modeling is as simple as doing a quarry on google. It involves a good many different processes and a number of very specific tasks that need to be done just right in order to be successful. This is just for basic export, getting things to pr quality is a whole 'nother story.

I've modeling objects from scratch and exported them successfully to bf2 so I at least have a bit of understanding of how hard it is to learn.

I understand that it would be a lot of work to put together such a list but It would save work for other people on a grand scale. Additionally, I agree that making things easy for people isn't always a good thing, but I passionately believe that when it comes to learning and teaching there is no such thing as making something "to easy to learn".

Just because something has always been done in a certain way doesn't mean it should always be done that way.

Hehe, did not say it was easy at all :p

Believe me I know ;)

But I truly and honestly believe that I (or any tutorial) can not teach how to make your first attempt at modeling into "PR quality". And if so it would be book, not a tutorial.

So yes, there are a looooooot of tutorials, not all of them good, but if people are just starting to learn they should just be getting comfortable with the interface and ways of working in a 3D environment - not worrying about getting stuff to a usable state. So any tutorial is a good tutorial.

When you know the interface and methods then we can start talking about making stuff 'the right way'.

I do agree that a list would be a good thing, but I won't be the one making it. I have wasted enough time over the years, trying to make useful contributions to the process of learning, to know that 80% of my effort is wasted or overlooked. About a year ago I started focusing my time on actually working on usable stuff instead, and hey presto I got blue tags for that...

Just my opinion.

You make a very good point. I guess it's just a pipe dream of mine then :P

personally i think you should do some simple things without thinking about PR at all, when you think you got basics of controls and interface pick up something what you want to make for PR and see what happens :-)

community modding section has quite a few tuts/links, also look into threads where something goes with feedback from DEVs(AAVP7 thread is a great example), you can find decent advices there
moddb, bfeditor.org etc. are also useful

If you want to learn to model you need to get off the realitymod forums and onto ones like game-artist.net, polycount.net, cgtalk etc. Dont post, just watch all their video tutorials, lurk and read, read, read. Come back here and post your amazing works and ask for help etc but this forum isnt the best for getting started.....

Sniper_dog14 wrote:I think it would be nice if someone browsed the bf2-related modeling tutorials out there and collected them in a list organized by difficulty and sorted by what order people should be learning them.

The mapping tut list was really well done and I believe it has brought a great many community mappers. A list like that related to modeling I think would go a long way towards helping a lot more people start with modeling than are already doing it.
Yes and I would have done this but there is a really big problem with it. As there are soooo many tutorials out there on modelling and there are sooo many different styles of modelling that it really isn't as simple as that.

Since I basically could skip a huge chunk of tutorials for 3DsMax since I already knew the basics from CAD etc, I can't really vouch for any good basic 3DsMax tuts myself. You really need a to a tut to see how good it is or not, with mapping I could basically just list all the tut's I've done and made myself but it isn't that simple with modelling.

I'm sure if you look hard enough out there you will on some site find a list of modelling tuts with the very basic to the very complex.
