All these unpronouncable player names..

Post by Mikemonster »

Just out of interest (this isn't a rant, i'm not that fussed), what drives people to have lots of numbers and punctuation marks in their Avtar names?

Sometimes it's downright hard to remember how to pronounce them or to know what's a clan tag and what's uber leet text talk disguising a name..

I'm presuming it's because people created an account for vBF2 and didn't need to worry about people actually saying it out loud?

people I like: Qubolo, Rudd, Selemeister, Scotty.. You see what i'm getting at? Nice simple pronounceable names.

What a simple world it would be if we all had 'Dave' as our player tag/username, lol.

Just had 5 mins to kill, thought i'd mention it. No drama whatsoever, just curiosity.

I know even mine is starting to be taken. The First Spush was me btw, back in 2005 in Call of Duty United Offensive.

I just kick anyone with an unpronounceable name or French accent out of my squad. Problem solved. :p

Well my problem is that I have never played a game before that used a mic.

It wasn't until PR that I realized "drkstr" (my usual alias) is easier read than spoken. hehe.

Changing it at this point would be more bother than it's worth I think.

many times I've gone "I'm sorry mate, I have no idea how to pronounce your name, could you say it for me?"

if I still can't get my head around it, I assign them a nickname or call them by kit.

I take one look, if I can't pronounce it, i make up a way and call them that until they leave.

If I have a person with an impossible nick then I usually give them the name Bob.

This is part of the reason I changed my name to BillSL.

Haha, I still remember the game when people were saying: "Oh, BillSL! GoGuapsy v2.0, huh!" Haha.

Anyways, I changed my name to BillSL (BillSL because Bill was already taken... Who would've thought of using this name?!) because people kept calling me "gipsy" or "gogipsy" (seriously guys? Guapsy = gipsy?). Someone even asked me what was a "Guapsy"...

Since then, everything has been made easier!

Except there was one guy who tried calling me "bisl"...

Guys, when a new player comes, just answer his question and go on your merry way, instead of going berserk! It's THAT simple! :D

I do the same thing, but I normally give them a name that's more degrading ("Cockrabbit, watch the left flank!" "Tiffany, grab a HAT kit!").

I figure if you don't have enough of a sense of humor to withstand being called "Koala Feltcher" for an hour, you wouldn't enjoy being in one of my squads anyways.

The other day I was in a squad with a guy that had a funny name, so Fox and I started throwing nicknames at him until something stuck. Makes it fun

Awwwww yea, here's to telling the new players they're not welcome to learn and are going to be judged on the username they picked more than their abilities or willingness to learn.

It's awesome to be the best.
Players might be hardcoded, but that sure doesn't seem to stop anybody from trying.

The only winning move is not to play. Insurgency, that is.
