Recommend me a computer build

Post by Airsoft »

I will be building a new computer next month and I need to start doing some researching, any help would be appreciated. Basically something that can play the newest games (bf3, skyrim, arma2) on the highest settings with decent frame rate AND that will last me at least the next 5 years playing the newest games. My budget is under $1000

Case - Coolermaster Elite 430 - Bought
Power Supply - Cooler Master GX 650W - Bought
Video Card - Asus GTX 580 or EVGA GTX 580 or GTX 570
CPU - Intel i7-3820 or i5 2500k
Hard Drive - 120/128GB SSD and Western Digital 1 TB HD or Western Digital 2 TB HD
Memory - Corsair Vengeance 2x 4GB
Motherboard -Asus P8Z68-V Pro or Asus P9X79 Pro
Cooling Devices - 5x case fans
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Optical Drive: LG BD-ROM

ill be still using the same keyboard, mouse, headset, dual screen monitors for now
Wont be buying from newegg, only using as a reference
how good is this?

You're set.

You can save money and skip the i7. the i5-2500k or i5-2550k are cheaper and there is only a few games on market that can take full advantage of the i7,
supreme commander 2
Dragon Age: Origins and the Dragon Age series
and a few others.

Hard Drive - ~120GB SSD for main (the 128Gb Samsung 830 is prefeable, it's expensive. Crucial m4 is good, then Intel, then Plextor.

and 2 TB normal HD for storage. The longer you wait, the better, HDD suppliers are finally getting production ramped up from the floods in Thailand last year.
Memory - 8 GB - Will cost under $50, if you overclock you should look online for known stable systems that use your mobo/RAM/CPU combo.
Motherboard -Asus ? (need to support 5.1 surround sound) If you plan to overclock, let us know, cheaper Mobos use cheaper capacitors, which eventually melt under the OC.
Cooling Devices - ? Easiest solution is the Corsair H100, but there are other options. Antec KUHLER H2O 920 or Asetek 570LX Extreme or CoolIT ECO II ALC CPU Cooler. Or build your own. Or buyh a PNY gtx580 with liquid GPU/CPU cooling PNY XLR8 VCGGTX580XPB-LC-CPU (also in a 3Gb VRAM version)

Windows 7 Home Premium

Blue Ray

IF you got time to bargain hunt, I suggest this strategy:
[R-COM]LITOralis.nMd wrote:My suggestion is based upon finding the best prices, not on specific hardware...

start checking online deals websites daily:
my personal preferred bargain hunting websites:
slickdeals.net
fatwallet.com
bensbargains.net
dell.com outlet deals in conjunction with coupons I find on the web.
amazon.com Gold box deals
email subscription to newegg.com for their daily deals
email subscription to us.ncix.com for their weekly deals

others I check from time to time:
techbargains.com
subscribe to tigerdirect.com email daily deals.
subscribe to buy.com email daily deals.

Sign up for accounts on slickdeals.net and fatwallet.com
You can create keyword searches that are instantly emailed to your email address you sign up with,
set up email deals alerts for "Radeon" "gtx" "psu" "i5-2500k" "ssd"
set up a filter in your email to put all those alert emails to a single folder.
you'll get some desktops and notebooks mixed in the emails, but it's a pretty good otherwise.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Piecemealing the system together by buying online retailers' loss leaders one at a time can save you upwards of 15% on the system as a whole. It takes some time and time is money, so it's up to you.

This week us.ncix.com has good deals on i5-2500k+mobo combo deals.

Check out the Dell outlet for gaming systems, if you hit it just right you can get a scratch and dent system for less than the cost of parts, and the system comes with WIn7Pro x64 which will cost you at a minimum $50 to buy. Finding those dell outlet coupons is tricky though.

As for waiting to buy the your GPU until the new ATI HD 7XXX and Nvidia cards come out, I agree with Pedz, those middle range ATI 78XX cards look like the way to go.

If you want to liquid cool everything, here's a link that rushn gave me.

Maximum PC | Build a Kick-*** Liquid Cooling System

And here's 2 sites that sells everything you need for a liquid cooling system.

http://www.dangerden.com/
http://www.koolance.com

I've been digging around on there, I'm looking towards liquid cooling everything in my computer in the future.

Liquid cooling is expensive. He has a $1000 budget and getting what he wants now is already a tight squeeze due to the need for a Win7 license and a BD drive. The closed loop systems are his best bet to keep it cost effective. To build a custom kit for CPU cooling costs at least $170 plus the time needed to configure build and test it. a CPU + GPU solution costs at least $285 plus the aforementioned.

Airsoft_Soldier, the PNY XLR8 VCGGTX580XPB-LC-CPU if you can find it for under $500 will do your GPU and liquid cooling for CPU/CPU, and allow you to buy a OEM box i5 CPU saving a few bucks compared to the boxed retail that comes with the stock Intel cooler. You will not have to deal with the super loud gtx580 fan during the Carolina summers.

If Airsoft ever wanted to go to a custom liquid cooling kit or wants to SLI his gtx580, it's possible to remove the hoses and nipples from the PNY XLR8 VCGGTX580XPB-LC-CPU and reconfigure the system however you want, stilll using the CPU block, GPU block, radiator and fans. Just add a pump, reservoir and another radiator/fan in the future.

The other upside is I've been considering this PNY XLR8 VCGGTX580XPB-LC-CPU build for almost a year and can help you out on it.

I recommend the board I use in every single one of these lol. Focus on getting ASUS first off. The exact model of mine uses the Z68 chipset with the 1155 socket. The name is P8Z68-V.

I use RAID features along with caching an SSD, and I overclock. Never a single problem with this board. It is awesome!

I always overlook something.

Found this on newegg. How is LiteOn? Cheapest I found that came with software.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827106451

Other wise, I have an ASUS OEM BD and it works great, minus I can't watch Blu-Ray, or DVDs. But that's why I have a PS3 and TV.

Newegg.com - ASUS Black 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-ray Drive Model BC-12B1ST/BLK/B/AS - Blu-Ray Drives (Dammit, may have built a computer too soon. Saw a review and someone said they had a software CD that came with it. Either they're lying or I got screwed).

Bingo
PNY XLR8 VCGGTX580XPB-LC-CPU $486.

Drop the 120 GB and instead get a 60 GB(The maximum is 60 GB for what im going to describe). This way you can do SSD caching on supported motherboards. This way it gives you a major performance boost on all your data, and when you stop playing a game its removed from the cache and replaced with another one so you don't have to do it manually. Heres a link: Intel Smart Response Technology and Intel SSDs: an Overview

I might even suggest just dropping the SSD altogether since you have a pretty tight budget. The I7 also doesn't have a major advantage so just drop down to the 2500k. The videocard might also need to be dropped to a GTX 570 otherwise you most likely will go over budget.

Also heres a link to a much cheaper GTX 580: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814127567

The one above is liquid cooled but I believe you would be better off going with air cooling for now and when you have more money to spend then get liquid cooling because liquid cooling is a hassle and air cooling saves you a lot. Liquid cooling is roughly $600 to do so for a budget under $1000 don't bother with it because there is no point in trying to fit it in.

I dont plan on going liquid cool anytime soon because its a bit complicated and cost, rather just stick several fans on my case all for under $50. As new technology comes out, the prices will be slightly lowered on the ones I listed in a couple months down the road. Downgraded the HD to 1TB from 2 because the costs are still high from the Thailand flood and I already have a 3 TB external drive for my laptop anyway. I narrowed down the motherboard choices, which is the best for the price?

You got to tell us what you want to narrow it down to...
mATX or ATX board?
how many pcie slots, every plan to crossfire or SLI?
how many USB3?
thunderbolt?
etc...

Also tell us if you plan to OC.

For OC'ing and if you are set on buying a Gigayte Mobo, and you want a ATX size mobo, the optimal I'd recommend is
Gigabyte Z68 GA-Z68XP-UD4 Rev 1.3
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/produc ... id=3977#ov

Here is the best reference point to start:

Sandy Bridge P6x Motherboards :
Sheet1
Intel Chipset P6x
"Sandy Bridge" Motherboards

I may want the possibility the OC sometime in the future when games get more graphically demanding and at least 4 USB3 slots. I dont plan on dual graphics card.
narrowed it down to these, and leaning more to the P9X79 since it has the latest chipset.
Not buying it from newegg, just using it as a reference so ignore the price.

Newegg.com - ASUS P8Z68-V LE LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Newegg.com - ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Newegg.com - ASUS P9X79 LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Newegg.com - ASUS P9X79 PRO LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with USB BIOS

Newegg.com - ASUS Sabertooth X79 LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

just wondering if the features from the sabertooth or P9X79 Pro would make a significantly better performance compared to the P9X79 based on what I plan on adding to it.

The LGA 2011 is the replacement for the Intel's high performance CPUs, the i7-900's. It's for those who need the extra power to do hardcore 3D rendering, photo/video editing, and computational math, not for gaming.

Right now the i5-2500K is the best gaming chip on the market, and there's not much else that gamers will benefit from with the 2011 socket. I'd say go for the i5-2500K and throw in a good SSD like you're already planing to do. You'd see a much better experience with that than with the boards with 2011 chipset. Also its cheaper obviously.

So its a no, you wont see much performance increase from any of those with x79 chipset, except the richer features. More USB3 ports, PRO variants have additional stuff like BT, better optimized for SLI which you again wont use.

As Lito said this one is recommended.

Updated the first post.

Going for the combination of either
Intel i7-3820 and Asus P9X79 Pro
or
Intel i5 2500k and Asus P8Z68-V Pro

will see how the price gets in the next months. Reason i'm going for asus is that I can get a discount on asus brands at a local place.

Leaning towards a samsung SSD, if there are any better brands that aren't incredibly expensive let me know. Also who makes good RAM?

Corsair. I have the Vengeance line. You can get 8GB for $50 + S&H.

Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Memory, Desktop Memory, Corsair, 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM, 8GB (2 x 4GB), DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800), 9, $25 - $50

ZING! And they come in 3 pretty colors (I have black, wish I would've gotten blue, would've matched the LEDs on my computer better).

I hear of a lot of people getting Crucial and Kingston. I've always stuck with Corsair though. MaSSive and LITOralis can give you some more options.
