What makes a good server
I'va always had an opinion of what makes a good server and a bad server, and what seperates the two. I've also wondered what others think because some people love servers that I can't stand. So without bringing server names and turning this into a flame war, lets discuss what makes a server that you call home. Whether it be the rules, admins, or members.
Hopefully this can help servers change for the better. Remember please keep this civilized and if possible keep names out.

Re: What makes a good server
The most important part of server are players willing to play on this server. If server have good reputation, good players will join it and help increase teamwork. Another important part is admins doing their job well. If they hear server population, and setting maps, that players will want to play and remove bad players fast from server, players will join this server again and again.

Players, nuff said. Rules and administration can only go so far, the rest depends on the playerbase, whether they have the right mindset or not. No rule can turn a player.
If you had only "good" players on a server with the right mind set, you wouldn't need rules, nor an admin enforcing them.

Elite players(Including their numbers and the will to accept newbies and players pass by), rules, Nice admins are important.
Clan members are willing to balance themselves can make the server energetic. Good communication can make combat tense and excellent.
Edit, Those Elites usually stay in one server, most of them are clan members of a certain clan.

Re: What makes a good server
the rules, admin system and mapchoice have to be made in order to attract the kind of population you want on your server. This doesn't always work. 4 admins and a bunch of rules cannot guarantee a good server when 60 players who have no idea on how this game should be played join.

I would say players as well. It's like when you're moving when you were a kid, you didn't wanna lose your best pals and all that even though you'd eventually find some awesome people in the new town you're moving to. You'd want to spare yourself the time finding new buddies to play with. The tows are metaphors for servers.
That's why if people start playing on a server it will be hard for them to change, how bad the server even is, unless their mates switch of course. Yes, that's basically all games for you today, you wan't play with people you recognize.

I would say the Squadleaders plays a big part. Skilled and dedicated Squadleaders that work together and guides his squad well will make the server more fun to play at. Even if your a noob you'll get a chance to do something useful for the squad and team if you have a good leader who helps you.
Of course it's a big + if the squadmembers is experienced.

Players and set of basic rules those players to follow. Admins dont have to do anything if players are as they should be. Only routine tasks, switching, mapvotes etc...but admins should not be visible at all. And if all is fine you got a winner.
Of course server must be set without any mistakes. Ready to rock.

- Good rules which can be adjusted to each maps. For example Korengal, if you don't allow the US to shoot from their main and the Taliban at them it isn't that realistic anymore.
And for BLUFOR shooting into the INS main, the INS main doesn't exist in RL it is just to give the INS an staging area to improve teamwork and a safe place for their assets.
- Admins whom listen and try to balance the teams for the sake of their server, teamstacking is OK but make sure that when the quality of the server goes down, that you need to start balancing the teams.
- No connection or other technical problems , because that is one of the major problems these days, that servers start to crash one by one.
- A solid maplist with mapvotes when asked for, I mean certain maps are still fun even when they are played a lot. Some are fun but not played so much, but otherwise stick to the rotation because if a vote is only won by one vote that means that the rest is not statisfied and will leave the server when needed.
- Good attractive server name, I mean who wants to play on a server called: 1337 Qu1ck$c0P3ZZZ 0nly for example, answer: Nobody.
- Good rules against trollers, I mean there are a lot of players who keep trolling but because of the ruleset they can't be kicked but they can still ruin the server.
- Excellent playerbase who accepts people but not the rotten apples.

If you meant by "elite", skilled players, I recommend you to be quite, otherwise you'll end up like Nessie.

Re: What makes a good server
This is the truth. But the second paragraph is not 100% truth. IMO admin is needed always because even the "good" players can sometimes misbehave, trolls can cfome, shit can happen to everyone and everything.Brainlaag wrote:Players, nuff said. One thing about rules. A fair ruleset is necessary. It solves a lot of problems, because even "good" players tend to think different about some topics, like squad named after asset and so on.
But in your case, chris, if I'm not wrong, you're thinking about setting up a teamwork oriented server. A new server with a new name and maybe even community. Sounds like a tough job to me, mainly because PRTA is there and there's nothing wrong with it (some say shit about admin and I agree - we had some shit admins, but now they're gone). Of course, some old faces that you have played with could hang on there and seed the new server. Because to survive a new server definitely needs seeders, good and responsive admins, mumble mandatory and clear ruleset.
So you gotta ask your self - why would people choose your server over, for example, PRTA or NwA? What will be the difference? What's gonna keep them stick to your server and put it in favourites? Although I haven't played PR lately, few weeks ago when I did, I didn't see much activity in the PRTA US (probably because of lack of seeders or admins) so another US based teamwork oriented mumble server actually is not a bad idea.

Yes there are. There are several players that are better than the majority of this community.Ptolemaios wrote:There are no "elites" in this game.

Re: What makes a good server
A good server? the basics, good admins, good players and good choice of map that fits the playerbase on at that time (thats a point lost on most admins, if a map doest suit who you have on the server its not going to end well for anyone). What is seriously missing is a great server, one where all 63 of your fellow players follow one mind set, where rules are implied and rarely need enforcing and where any map can be fun at any time, thats what this community needs, not just another "good" server.
