[SOLVED] PR Hard Copy?

Post by Ranger811 »

Today, I went to re-install PR to ensure I had a clean install before installing the Anders Soundmod. I thought had a back-up copy of v.973 saved. However, I apparently wasn't paying much attention to what i was doing and ended up uninstalling both copies. :? ??: I began downloading .973 through Desura again. (This is where the story gets depressing) I made it about 400Mb or so through...at about 7.5 kb/s (yeah my internet is that slow) and the download failed. I experience this everytime i try to download something. My internet connection is so pathetically slow and unstable that i cant complete a download, even downloading 6Mb songs fails! I have tried everything i can to get a better internet connection but there are simply no options considering the closest city around me is 5 miles away and is only about 1500 people.

Anyways that is the background story to my problem, which is i literally cant download PR anymore. I wondered if you guys had considered selling hard copies (CDs, Thumbdrives, etc.)? I mean i would pay good money for that, i am sure I'm not the only one.

This is exactly the reason why we use torrent files as our primary download source. Resume support, no download corruption, and usually a lot faster :) . You should try grabbing the torrents rather than using Desura or the other mirrors.

Ask a friend or relative to download it for you, then burn on dvds or usb stick.
Or do they have slow internet as well?

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure someone from the community will help you out and send it to you over (real) mail :) .

One more option. When you are in some bigger town, or city go to Internet cafe (?) ( not sure if those exist in USA at all ), and download what you need there. Ask personnel to save it for you on USB stick or DVD disk ( dont forget to bring some type of media with you ).

Other than that what guys said above, and Id gladly help you but mail would be chilly pepper expensive from here to USA.

I guess you are on HughesNet or WildBlue?
I have dealt with this before, here is a link to The HughesNet Fair Access Policy (F.A.P.)
The Fair Access Policy (FAP)
It's pretty horrible.

I know that WildBlue has had a Torrent blocking policy since 2006. Pretty sure that includes a large file transfer policy too. More info on the updated ViaSat download policy is here:
Exede WildBlue Viasat FAP limits warning
Viastat only allows for an entire month enough bandwidth to D/l the PR install file,

Has anyone used any of the "Download managers" to download the 3 parts of 0.973 Full from a FTP or HTTP source? I think that would be your best bet. THe download manager I've used is DownThemAll, which is a Addon for Firefox : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... wnthemall/

There are other options for download managers, some of them stand alone programs. This is one of the most popular:
Free Download Manager - absolutely free download accelerator and manager freedownloadmanager.org

I don't know what to tell you, maybe someone would step up and burn you a DVD and send it along in mail, if someone in the community who hasn't signed on as a official volunteer wants to send Ranger811 a PM and volunteer it would be much appreciated.

Please let us know if you find someone to help you out Ranger811,

Rushn, you don't understand Ranger's arrangement, there are no other choices for him right now.
There is HughesNet, WildBlue, or Wildblue/Viastat. Those are his only three options.

Let's hope someone can burn Ranger a DVD and send it along to him in the mail.

I was just going to try the torrent to see if it was better than desura. Im sure is still gonna be slow as hell. I did think of trying to download the files at an internet cafe. A buddy of mine owns the only thing remotely close to an internet cafe in town, hes a big gamer so im sure he would do it for me, (i'd probably get him hooked on pr too haha). He says they get around 1 or 1.5 Mb/s download speeds, which is still pretty slow but over 100x faster than my speeds. I have looked into HughesNet and WildBlue a few times, they told me if im looking to use those services for online gaming i will be severely disappointed.

The most heartbreaking thing is last year i watched Verizon put Fiber Optic cable in the ground...right across the highway from my house. I called to see if i could get hooked up and they told me the line wasnt for customer use. I basically begged them to just run it to my house, no one wouldl ever know ')... didnt work.

Well thanks for the ideas, Ill see if i can get it done. if not, i'll be able to download a few copies when i head to college this fall. Keep up the good work guys.

Ahh all better now. I had never used torrents before so i was a bit skeptical when i downloaded BitTorrent. I downloaded all 3 parts, and the map pack over night. Downloading the way i used to, the same download...took about a week. I feel like an idiot for not using torrents a long time ago. I also tried using Free Download Manager like Litoralis mentioned, which was very useful.

No more PR withdrawals for me! Thanks for the help guys :D
