New CPU
I am tired of my CPU bottleneck of my unblack edition 955. My original plan was to buy an am3+ mobo and get a fx-4170. But after watching a few review they arent that great compared to the phenom II am3. So now i have decided to stay with my am3 mobo and get a 965 BE and a liquid cooler and over clock.
thoughts? what will give me the best CPU performance for gaming? $200 firm budget

Re: New CPU
You live close to a microcenter, fry's or NCIX?
microcenter in Tustin, CA has the 965BE for $90 .
microcenter is not cheap for liquid cooling.
Stick to the Corsair H80, or H100 , or Kuhler 920 for proven entities. The grinding motor noise on the H100 is a known issue.
New kid on the block is the http://www.neweggbusiness.com/Product/P ... 6835106189 Thermaltake WATER2.0 Pro but it hasn't been out long enough to see if there are issues with durability.
Asetek makes all three, be aware of the large size of these coolers before buying.

, everything else is kids toys.
IDK if you play Arma2 and will buy Arma3, both the 955 and 965 will be marginal for Arma3 from what we've been told.

What will be a cpu that will completely be able to handle the game on high settings?

Re: New CPU
The more popular Intel Sandy and Ivy bridge CPUs will. I managed high setting on my AMD FX-8150, so I'm sure the 8120 will also.theiceman wrote:What will be a cpu that will completely be able to handle the game on high settings?
But right now Intel is the better bang for the buck. An i5-2500K or i5-3570K are ones to go with. I have the 2500K now, kind of with I'd gotten the 3570K, but no regrets as it'll last me until it's time for a new rig (probably another 18 months). Pair the 3570K up with a Z77 chipset board and you'll have some killer performance. Look for deals, any type that you can. I got an older Z68 chipset board for $140, it's an ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 which was normally a $200 board before it was on sale, and probably a whole lot more before the Z77 chipset boards came along. You just have to be patient.
If I wasn't going after a combo, this is probably what I'd get.

Re: New CPU
I want to try an intel CPU but i dont think it will be in my budget anytime soon. So i guess the question now is what type of bottleneck will I get with a 965 liquid cooled by an H60. If i can get it up to say about 3.5 or 3.6 GHz? i am going to get a card like a 5870 or 6950

Re: New CPU
Someone had asked the same question in July, here is the thread,
https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f329-h ... pr-a2.html
tl;dr of the above thread:
If you can OC the PHenom 965BE to 4.1Ghz, and get a 6870, you should be good to play Arma2 at 40 to 60 fps, I'm sure you can play Arma3 at slightly reduced settings and reasonable fps if Arma3 is ever released.
You'll need to go find becnhmarks from mid 2009 to find your answer,
stuff like this:

Re: New CPU
I have a fx 8120 and arma sits at 30 ish % when i play it. Probablly because my graphic card bottle necks it ( gtx 430). I'm yet to play a game that even uses more than 50% cpu usage.
The navy says 70% of the world is covered by water... Well 100% of the world is covered by air...

Re: New CPU
Well, when the i5-2500K is $220, and the i5-3570K is $230, why not just pay the extra $10 and get the newer product? When I bought my i5-2500K, the i5-3570K was a little bit more than it is now and I was on a tighter budget.Daniel wrote:Sany Bridge rulezzzzzz with my i7-2600k (Why not such one, iceman?)

Mange, you're not naming the i7-2600k what I wrote about...
Why no i7 at all?

Re: New CPU
Since there is a newer, better, cheaper one already, I guess and hope... ?
