I got a bunch of .max files I want to take a look at, but don't have 3ds max.
The only thing I want to do is quickly open the files and view the models, if possible in a similar way how BfMeshView works: click and drag the mouse to fly around the object, zoom in/out, etc.
3D model "viewer" software?

Maybe you can find something for the 3ds because this is a simple and old file type. But you will have no luck with the max files.

I'm pretty certain .max files are proprietary, i.e. require Autodesk's proprietary dlls to view.

Good one... except I don't want to give p3d the rights to use the models... which you do if you upload there
.

Re: 3D model "viewer" software?
When i first started my Game Design Diploma i had that issue where i couldn't import .max files into Unity , at least i could import them but i couldn't add them to the scene , the ONLY way i know that works properly is to Install 3Ds Max ,
[R-COM]LITOralis.nMd already pointed it out, .max files require the DLL's to view it..
