I'm wanting to know if I play this game on a cracked version of BF2, and if not, what version should I update BF2 to?

And no cracking! Look around for a cheapy at a local store, its not much money anymore and I think Origin has the collection (including Special Forces and the 1.5 patch included) for 10 bucks right now, if you hurry (on account of their veterans day sale).

1./ you can't play on a cracked version of BF2
2./ you need to upgrade your legit version of BF2 to 1.5

Actually he can. But in that case he can't play on all servers. He can play on pirated servers like 3ebra or vBios.

Of course you can play with a "cracked" version of BF2 but you need a legit key (very very very cheap on internet)
