Project Reality doesn't start (Steam BF2)

Post by Emb »

My problem is when i try to start PR.exe, it asks my permission to start, because i run is as admin, but nothing happens when i approve. No any black screens or anything, just nothing. Cursor loading thingy rolls couple of times but nothing else happens.

If i put the shortcut into Steam, and try to start it, it says that I'm in game for few seconds and then I'm not anymore, so i think it does something, but not with so much success.

I've tried:

- Installing PR again, all three packs with admin rights. Nothing.
- Installing BF2 again. Nothing.
- Downloaded retail BF2.exe thingy. Nothing.
- Starting PR in XP SP3 mode + admin rights. Nothing.
- Starting PR in windowed mode. Nothing.
- Starting PR from community of BF2. It restarts, but i cant do anything because it says i need to open PR from pr.exe and i need to exit the game.
- Installing non-Steam version of BF2, but Steam key is not valid with it.
- Autohotkey script for starting. Nothing. Says starting timed out.
- Running steam with admin rights. Nothing.

Does anyone know what is maybe going on? Or can't i play at all. :(

Thanks for any suggestions!

Yeah, BF2 starts fine. And i can play online and whatnot.

I forgot to say that i removed all the files of PR and BF2, cleaned everything with CCleaner, installed again BF2 in steam, played for a while and then installed PR, but that didn't work.

Have you tried turning off user account control to force it to run as an admin?
Turn User Account Control on or off
(It's easy to turn on again if it's not the problem)

Oh and another thing to check is when you hit the PR shortcut, have your Task Manager open and check if the BF2.exe process and PR.exe process start up.

Tried UAC thing, only difference is that i dont have to approve the startup.

And when theres no sign of BF2.exe or PR.exe in Task Manager and process tab... Fuck this bullshit :(

The way PR works is pr.exe starts up bf2.exe and tr.exe... do you by any chance have an antivirus/anti-malware program running?

I'm not saying it's the case, but theoretically it could see the process trying to start others as a malicious action and block it...

** I can't recall seeing an issue like this in all my years here tbh... it's usually a crash on splash screen/startup (profiles issue), or loading maps (bad version issue), or while ingame (various issues)... or even my unique issue of PR crashing due to the mumble overlay. Never seen the processes dying before really starting. That's what leads me to the above conclusion

Got it in english too:

system.xml looks like a .Net Framework problem...

Reinstallind Framework didn't change anything. I downloaded PR from another mirror and tried again installing, but nothing happens.

Any friends that own the non-steam BF2 that would let you borrow their serial key to test to see if it is a steam problem?

Emb, the following is the solution to your problem, but you got to tell us if you are a programmer or not cause it could screw up your database connections...

So, what OS are you running? winXP, Vista, 7 , 8 etc? 32 or 64 bit?
In which order did you install your dot net frameworks?
Are you running any developer tools that use dot net framework?
Are you running a slimmed down version of the OS?
Have you disabled system processes?
Are you running modified SQLServer or SQL ServerLite databases?

One option (The best chance we got) would be to uninstall ALL OF YOUR DOT NET FRAMEWORKS and reinstall just the newest dot net framework. Seems if you install 3.5 on top of 4.0 then do a particular windows update for 4.0 from sometime prior to Jan2012 , the pointers to the .dll files are set to incorrect locations.
DO NOT TRY THIS YET!!!

The other option is as follows:

in the dot net framework
Configure your local runtime security policy to grant either trust to the assembly, or alter the zone trust settings.
There isn't a safe way to fix this.. that I know of...

Download this:
Strong Name Tool (Sn.exe)
run it as admin, type in this:
sn -Vr *,*
(yes that's a comma).

BEfore you attempt the above post, let's try a quick test:

Download and install the paint.NET application

Paint.NET - Download

it uses the same dot net framework... if that also falis, we'll know that the dot net framework is the culprit.
