Knives for pilot kits?
Pretty much as in title, would give downed pilots a better chance of survival to silently take out someone in your way rather than having to use your pistol.

Yes I'm sure strapped to you in your survival kit when your ejecting out of a fast moving jet is a SMG with 4 mags and not a knife which is the bare essential part of any survival gear...CrazyHotMilf wrote:i would say give them mp5 with 4 mags , but knifes wont be realistic
If your going to say something is realistic or not realistic, back it up with a source otherwise your going to start receiving infarctions from the moderators.

Re: Knives for pilot kits?
I guess he was sarcastic
I am sure that a pilot in RL allways has a knife with him (to cut the parachute for example)
Well i found some info about the survival stuff of RAF pilots but it seems that ther is no knife with the survival gear.
http://www.oldjimbo.com/Outdoors-Magazine/Air-Crew-Survival-Pack-MK4.pdf
However almost all Soldiers i met have a knife (at last a pocketknife) and a pilot is one of the ones that really could need one, if he has to jump over enemy ground.
(sadly i couldnt find any proof of pilots carrying knifes at the moment, will edit if i find something)

I have yet to see CrazyHotMilf be sarcastic....
Don't have any solid evidence but its probably classed more as their normal gear rather than survival gear.

Roger Locher - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaMilitary units issue some type of survival knife to pilots in the event their plane may be shot down. Survival knives can be used for trapping, skinning, wood cutting and other uses.
I'm sure searching more you could find many more refs.He removed a couple of essential items from his survival pack and left the remainder behind. His survival vest contained a pistol, two pints of water, a first aid kit, insect repellent, mosquito netting, and a knife. He knew from prior briefings that he could not expect SAR this deep in North Vietnam, north of the Red River. Once on the ground and under the trees, he could not hear any jets overhead. He also knew his radio could not penetrate the dense jungle canopy overhead.

Re: Knives for pilot kits?
Give the Pilot the penknife kit.
It takes 1 health off the enemy with each strike, and 0.5 health off the pilot (to simulate the non-locking blade collapsing and slicing into his fingers).

Re: Knives for pilot kits?
Slightly off topic but I remember reading something about a downed pilot in Vietnam who had some mini-shotgun thing issued in his survival kit, it was only intended for hunting but it could have been used to shoot at the enemy. (maybe somehow relevant to PR:V.)

Anyway im pretty sure pilots dont have knife to stop ninjas from bailing out of aircraft and to stop thefts of aircraft on the runway for stupid things like that.

I think his source was Call of Duty 4, when "Deadly" and her Cobra was shot down in the town... She had an MP5 with her to repel enemy attacks lolCrazyHotMilf wrote:i would say give them mp5 with 4 mags , but knifes wont be realistic

What are you talking about CoD is the best source of military information. In my opinion snipers should get tomahawks instead of knifes.

I see the point, knifes should be included in a pilot kit, you want to make the game as realistic as possible. But i dont think anyone will be using a knife to fight enemies.

Re: Knives for pilot kits?
It's not used in combat at all in RL (except some crazy special units I guess). But it's nice to backstab some l33t sniper while saying "sorry" over voice command a second before you brutaly stab him.MINTEEER wrote:I see the point, knives should be included in a pilot kit, you want to make the game as realistic as possible. Personally I don't see a use in giving the pilot kit a knife. The knife is also only usefull for stabbing fobs or said situation. And since I never saw a Pilot searching for FOBs, I think it's not worth the effort to add it in-game except for the realism.
But I wish the knife in general had more usage than stabbing FOBs. Like cutting the ropes but we had that suggestion already

Any airforce included in PR is a valid source. I'm sure one of them has a knife in their kit. I know the Canadian air force does. I'm also quite sure pilots get hunting weapons, its kind of unrealistic to give them a 9mm pistol.. what good is a 9mm pistol against animals which they would need to kill to survive?

Re: Knives for pilot kits?
Why not add the knife sure there aren't many situations where you need it but is it really that much effort to add something to the kit that could be useful??
I have no idea about that and it could be hard as shit which would make me an ******* if so sorry devs
Any way knives always come in handy when you have those awkward moments in close quarters when you both pump out all your rounds at each other and some how both miss every shot because deviation hates you.

Re: Knives for pilot kits?
I saw this from a blog on Future War Stories... Whether it helps this matter I don't know. My knowledge doesn't expand to PDW's and pilots :L
...Then, there is the compact "shorty" or "commando" carbines, like the AKS-74U, the old CAR-15, and the M4 CQBR, which have been used by military personnel like a personal defense weapons over the 9mm pistol or .38 revolver, like the helicopter pilots during Vietnam, and today, after the 1993 Blackhawk Down incident. These commando carbines are also used by Special Forces units for CQC operations, like the killing of UBL or street-fighting in Mogadishu during Blackhawk Down. This allows these commando carbines to be extremely flexible at performing both defensive and offensive operations.

Re: Knives for pilot kits?
Yes it is somewhat common for Chopper pilots to have an SMG afaik (at least with US forces, dunno about others), the thing is, the pilot kit ingame is for both jet and chopper pilots, and as such, we need to give them a weapon which fits both, and as a jet pilot can't eject out of a fast moving jet with a SMG or Carbine for obvious reasons, and do commonly have a pistol on them in a holster for defensive purposes if they do have to eject, and its also quite common for Chopper Pilots to also only have a pistol, then its quite an obvious choice.
If however we do end up splitting the pilot and helicopter kits in the future which we might do then we may issue the Chopper Pilot with an SMG but that isn't a promise, depends what our MAs say about what's common with other forces etc.

"Quite sure" doesn't cut it, here.lgm wrote:I'm also quite sure pilots get hunting weapons, its kind of unrealistic to give them a 9mm pistol.. what good is a 9mm pistol against animals which they would need to kill to survive?
US fixed-wing crew get issued 9mm pistols; M9s, and Navy also issues M11 [SIG P228]. They (and helicopter crew) up until the 90s used to get issued .38 revolvers. In the 60s/70s they didn't get issued speed-loaders for those, either, but I don't know if that ever changed. There was one exception with fixed-wing aviators that I know about: "slow-FAC" pilots in Vietnam sometimes also carried M16s in the cockpit and left their parachute harnesses off because they flew so low. One FAC pilot received the Medal of Honor (posthumously) for strafing an advancing enemy force that had a friendly unit pinned down by firing his M16 through the cockpit window with his hands off the controls.
Nowadays, helicopter crews might also get M4s depending on the threat environment. Because of the survival vests the magazines for these (basic load issued with the weapon is 7) are often carried in a thigh rig. MP5K-PDW were only issued in the early '90s to 160th SOAR aircrew prior to the full type-classification/adoption of the M4. As far as other forces, I have heard that the British Army Air Corps was looking at L22 to equip their crews, but I don't know if those are issued 1 per man or 1 per crew. I also don't know if RAF or FAA followed suit.
As for hunting weapons, in SERE courses, aircrew also learn how to trap animals and which bugs (:tired

Re: Knives for pilot kits?
I think a knife would be nice for pilots. He doesn't have to use it but why not let it be there, you never know. Also according to the previous posts pilots do carry a knife for survival purposes and cutting their parachutes etc. so I really don't find it a bad idea.
