[Map] Operation Cypress (2km) [Concept]

Post by ShaunOTEast »

Map based on Cypress Bowl Alphine Resort in North Vancouver, BC, Canada. Mt.Strachan specifically
Size: 2km
Factions: CFvsRU
Gamemode: AAS (32v32 and maybe inf only night layer)
Gameplay type: Mechanized infantry and infantry combat
Backstory: Russian ground forces have launched a preliminary attack on Cypress Bowl in preparation for the invasion of the West Coast. The CF must now retake the mountain held by Russian paratroopers or lose North Vancouver.
A friend of mine (Hawkowl/jsdk70, also please welcome him to the forum and PR) and I had been skiing recently at Cypress and we thought the terrain of cypress ski resort would be really unique and enjoyable to fight over in PR. The map would feature lots of flanking routes and thick forests for mech. inf and inf to have combat in (respectively) and objects that would provide interesting cover such as moguls, terrain parks, jumps . And since the terrain would in favour of whoever was at the peak, I thought it would be really interesting if the assets were purposely unbalanced (i.e. APCs, gun cars and trans cars for CF, and just BRDMs and trucks for RU)
Also some problems that might come up that I thought about:
-winter camo for CF(?)
-our experience with mapping
Hawkowl and I both have some knowledge of L3DT, B2 Editor, SketchUp, AutoCad, and little bit of 3DsMax, we know it will be a long project, but we are determined, if anyone could give us tips or help, it would be great :) We will declare this WIP as soon as we can, however we are still highschool students. :-D

Here are some photos to give you guys an idea of how it will look

The minimap will look somewhat like this?

Found this on Google Earth, better visual.

Reason: grammar, gamemode correction and night layer idea

Well, this will be interesting.

Looks like canadian mappers are fond of snow. And that's good, we need variety.

Check "Alert" map, CTRifle is working with that kind of environment.

:P

Yea I'm making snow textures for the CF, you can use them once they're done, also when I'm done my snow material you can use that as well if you like. We Canadians love snow :D

lol, you're also doing the RU which I'm also doing so you can use those textures too when I'm done haha

this map might be cool , but IMO I advise you guys to make a no snow version (don't know if it's snowy all the time down there?) We already have some snow maps that aren't played at all ;/
Canadians have some cool woodland camo that are not used in any map currently,

BTW why 2km? for the layout I see it would be better 4km

anyways, whatever you guys decide, good luck ;)

Edit: apparently CT is making the snow camo ;P

Well, I hope that the snow map will be played :P

I think the only reason that the other ones weren't played is because they didn't have all the snow effects and such, textures or whatever..

I don't see a reason why snow maps are frowned upon really.. if it has all the stuff a normal map has then..

Also I'm Canadian and like snow ;)

I thought the CF only had the white boots, but still had the green CADPAT even in snowy areas... Anyway.

Also, I am Canadian, and I approve moar snow maps ! And hopefully, with all the super-cool snow textures that CTR made, snow maps will be more popular in PR ! :)

Yeah . . . Russians are close to Canada and they don't like
each others too much, but do wee need to have Canadians
battling Russians on each potential map ? Can we have China on this one ?

hmmm... just thinking aloud here, but i think it would also be cool to do a paradrop insertion for the russians, and they have to capture their main at the beginning of the round, sorta like the germans in silent eagle.

Geographically speaking, it would be more wise for China to invade the USA directly either in Alaska or in the mainland, instead of passing by the tiny bit of Canada between Alaska and Washington state :p

Russian just have to go directly to Canada without anything in their way.

We wanted to try using the terrain and features of an alpine resort such as terrain parks, moguls and jumps. We thought about not having a snow map, but cypress wouldnt be cypress without snow :D We also picked 2km because we wanted bigger and more intense inf combat, especially at the beginnings of the run with the thick treeline.
Also I think the actual mountain is around 1km in width...

We thought about it too, and since CT is already making CFvsRU we may change it

Considered that as well, but it is 2km (is that too small?)....will think more about the spawning and assets when we have all the terrain mapped out, thanks though :)

Actually, I like the idea of having China. We don't have any CF vs PLA yet. Do the PLA have snow/winter camo in-game?

Why to invade USA ? Canada is Enough !

Now seriously . . .
PR already have really silly scenarios with maps with RUvsIDF ot
RUvsPLA,and especially GB and USMC against Chechen Rebels.
So China vs Canada why not . . . Anyway it is yours map guys
so you can put even MEC if you want . . . :-?

Opfor will probably end up as something other than RU, if not there will be 3 CFvsRU maps
But right now we are focused on the technical side of things because we are noobs to mapping.
Also we might not add snow camo because it doesn't snow that much in Vancouver and the CF wouldn't switch camo for one mission??? I dunno I've never actually seen Canadian military winter camo, even in that CFS Alert video on CT's map thread. Will research though, because it'd be pretty weird for a northern nation's military not to have winter camo.

PLA might fit well here, and 2km would give you benefit of having more dense forests without going too high on the overall overgrowth count, plus the terrain grid will have 2m squares as opposed to 4m of a 4km map. Just make sure that you are able to fit the whole area into 2x2 km without scaling it down too much. Since its heavily forested area, Dont think that woodland or snow camo will matter much.

The Canadian Forces don't have snow camo, they only have the woodland CADPAT and the desert camo. The only "snow camo" thingy they have is white boots :p

Obviously, you'll have to make the CF use the CADPAT in your map :)

And for the CF vs RU, it's kind of accurate, because if we currently take CTRifle's map and yours as being part of a North American invasion scenario by Russia, well... You're map should feature Russia !

Also, I don't know if we've seen a lot of maps where the Russians fight mainly on foot :p
