pr 0.98 freezing problem

Post by labonte95 »

Ever since i patched my pr to 0.98, my game will randomly freeze for 10-15 seconds, and sometimes even up to a minute but then go back to normal. ive searched the forums for this problem cannot find any help. Somebody told me ingame it has to do with keypackets. Ive updated Punkbuster, fully reinstalled bf2, pr, my drivers, everything.

System specs:
AMD Athlon(tm) 7750 Dual-Core Processor 2.7 GHz
4Gb or Ram
Win7 ultimate SP1
ATI Radeon HD 3800
Direct X 11
50 Gb free disk space.

Anyhelp is much appreciated. and i apologize if this has been brought up elsewhere.

Hi - welcome to the forums:

I've moved this to the tech support forum.

Are you you using a wireless connection to the internet?

Does this problem happen in vBF2 (normal BF2)?

If PR was working fine on 0973,
Probable cause is that the 098 installer highly fragmented your compressed .zip files that contain the game textures.

I suggest as a first step to defrag the drive you have bf2 and pr installed on,
also delete your shaders folder Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache and let the game rebuild the shaders next time you play.

thanks for the help guys. i was actually able to sorta fix the problem by typing "pb_sleep 400" into the console. im still going to defrag my drive and do a complete install of pr and bf2.

ok so after reinstalling bf2 and pr and then defragging, i still have this freezing problem. i tried lowering my graphics to bare minimum and it didnt help. i have no idea why i still keep freezing. kinda makes the game unplayable. im all out of ideas i might have to do a complete reinstall of my entire system. the only thing i can think of is maybe the download got corrupt? ill try to re download 098 and see if that helps

if typing "pb_sleep 400" into the console sort of fixed the problem, check your antivirus and firewall to make sure none of the punkbuster files are being flagged and quarantined/blocked.

ok it seemed pnkbstrA wasnt allowed for public and that seemed to fix the freezing. thanks for all the help littoralis. but it seems a new problem occured. now, when i first launch the game, i see the splash screen and it takes about 5 min for the game to launch. doesnt affect the game at all but it is a little annoying. havnt really searched the forums because it doesnt seem like a big problem

That almost always has to do with your favorites servers list being very big and the BF2 engine takes forever to stops trying to ping dead/offline servers, and it only pings one server at a time. So imagine a list of 15 server, 10 of which are offline, and BF2.exe is waiting 100 seconds for each dead server to not respond.

The easiest solution is to delete your favorites, either in the game through favorites window, or deleting the file, which, Sorry, I forgot the location of atm. A quick google search should help.

I have a virus that ruined my own PC so I don't have BF2 installed atm, I can't look.

I found the post

Hannes_Sbg wrote:Search for the "General.con" in

C:\Documents and Settings\*******\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\000X
or
C:\Users\*******\Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\000X

open it with WordPad or NotePad and delet all entries starting with:

"GeneralSettings.addServerHistory"

like this one:

"GeneralSettings.addServerHistory "217.146.93.112" 29900 "*** MeRkpr.co.uk TEAMWORK SERVER ***" 140"

If you dont want any favorites you can write protect the General.con
Optionally
To write protect, , right click General.con select properties, Check the Box that says Write Protect or Read Only.

well unfortunately the freezing started again. everything is allowed through my firewall. the only thing i can think of is a physical hardware problem, but all my other games seem to run fine so im not even sure if its that.

I have a similar freezing problem with 0.98 but only like 2-3 seconds at a time. Really frustrating when flying or in combat.

I'm at a loss on this one,
could be a fragmented pagefile,
the BF2 and PR files are on the end of the disk,
a networking issue,
