Mumble not being used like it was designed to be

Post by Lugi »

I realize this might be a bit early to post my feedback on this topic, but I'll do it anyway and see if other people have the same thoughts on this.

What bothers me is that mumble is now being used mainly for the inter-squad communication (like vanilla voip), and local speech is used to a much lesser extent, which defeats its purpose.
I think every conversation over radio should get a distortion filter of some kind to mark the difference between using radio and speaking directly to somebody. Because right now its just easier to use inter squad radio and ignore local speech (as it gained a lot of quality when compared to bf2 voip).

Btw. it's also pretty confusing for me because I can't instantly tell if the person I hear is talking right behind me, or just using the intersquad comms, especially during more intense moments.

As I stated, this is only my observation after 10+ hours of PR 1.0 gameplay

In my experience playing 1.0, Mumble is being used exactly the same it's been used with previous version.

And it's not like the mumble squad chat wasn't there in the previous versions.

Squads I've been in that use squad channel as opposed to local during a fire-fight, I leave the squad immediately.

It's like being in the supermarket and asking the grocer how his day has been and him getting on the address system to answer me. "WHY I'M FINE, HOW ARE YOUUUUU?"
What is it about positional audio do people not get? When you are in an intense fire-fight, wouldn't it be BENEFICIAL to know where your squad mates are in relation to you? Would you put on headsets connected to walkie-talkie radios with your team in a soccer game? It's like all your friends struggling to swim in denim jeans and sweaters. Hey guys have you tried just using shorts? It makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Valid point. People just need to be told to use Local when in gunfight, that's all. And OP gave a nice suggestion to mark the Squad channel with radio noise or other sound that would distinguish it from Local.

This gets especially bad with some of the newer players when you are asking them to call out so you can revive and they are using the squad channel. I'm not sure if all of them know about local.

local chat is now ALOT more usefull with the "friendlies tag" removal over the players, today on Saaremaa, I was moving where my squad was, and I encountered 4 enemy soldiers in front of me, I was so close to them that they didn't realized that I was enemy, then they saw me and started shooting until they got me, so yes local chat in mumble is more usefull right now, and has always been like that.

I dont see the point mumble seems to be just VOIP renamed from my experiences in 1.0, i think only the squad leaders should have radio and the members only have local.

How are you supposed to communicate back to your SL then? Imagine yourself out of the range of local and SL asks you something. Or you want to ask him but can't.

Yes, im going tos tart punching people that use squad channel all the time. SL can use that to give orders, for petty talk there is local not loud microphones on sq channel.

What i also saw is whenever i led a squad, there was nobody really talking much on the SL channel...

Hopefully people will start to use it more as the new wears off.

The only thing needed to the current mumble system is a sound effect of a radio when using the squad channel, squad leader command channel, or the commander channel.

I mainly use the squad channel simply because local often is too quiet, especially during combat. Local is more useful to talk to people in other squads or in situations where your location _really_ is important, other than that squad channel is fine for most purposes.

I don't see how this is such a big deal, both are viable and have pros and cons in certain situations.

Also, I dislike the idea of a "radio noise filter", have you heard some of the microphones people are using? Please don't make it any harder to figure out what some guys are saying.

Also one thing I hate : Talking to a squadmate close to you with local and having him answering on squad chat
