New to the game, and eager to enter online play.

I am a forty-nine year old kid, who loves to experience things, and the experience that Project Reality gives looks to be, forgive the expression, awesome. I really look forward to joining the online Project Reality battles in the near future.

I am late to online play. I own several FPS games, but never played online until I went back to Bad Company 2 on the PC.

I have been delaying my entry until I could get a new headset, and a better feel for the Co-op mode, but those AI are just to unpredictable for me to follow. I am coming from BF3 experience, where I am more of an objective player over a kill/death player, and even had a few games where I was top score, but not a top killer.

My big thing is I don't want to spoil anyone elses game, while I get up to speed. How much is expected of a new player who is determined to try and be a part of the unit.

Identifying units is still something I am trying to work on, and I am sure my aim needs work as well. I do not have any interest in flying or operating heavy armor.

Also one more quick question. What kind of round times could be expected in online play. I have watched videos online that were as short as thirty-five minutes, but I know a match could last much longer than that. How well does the team balancing work as well.

Just let your squad know you are new, stick to squad kits for a start (rifleman, medic, AR etc.), just listen to your squad leader and you'll be right.

WRT identfying enemy - look for the subtle differences - helmets and boots work for me.

Rounds go from anywhere between 10 mins (skirmish layers with 100 players) to 4 hours on most servers. Don't feel you have to be there for the whole round to enjoy it - it's a objective based game - defend / attack a flag, desroy a fob, kill a cache so you can get something out if even if you only have 10-15 minutes to spare.

Noddy hit the nail on the head, check out the manualwhen you can as well. Its long but there's a ton of helpful information and will make playing much easier.

Always inform your SL that you're new, it'll allow them to give you easy tasks and then go from there.

I'd recommend playing on Tactical Gamer (TG) when its up, which is widely regarded as the most teamwork-centric US server.

Although I don't have good times to play, I do recommend you join the servers like TG, PRTA etc. those servers welcome new ppl.

Since you sound like your not the typical hardcore gamer I want to give you some early warnings.

Don't expect all squads to be functional because they are not , but your best choice is to join the first infantry squad that pop up at the beginning of a round since that is most likely a experienced squad-leader and not a guy that was forced to be a squad-leader.

Also you need to have your personal "bullshit" filter enabled, since there are players who rage a lot when playing PR and new players seems to be there primary target. Don't take it personal just find a good squad-leader and stick with him, as long as your following his orders and the server rules you should be safe.

Some of the best squad-leaders in PR are +40 years btw they don't seem to be spoiled like the younger generations

Hi and welcome good to see a mature gamer take the time to say hi and ask for help. Take that attitude into the game and you will be given a lot of help and advice just like in this thread.

Some games you will think why bother and some game you will get out of your PC chair look around and wait for the shakes to settle while realising you are still at home and a CAS Cobra isnt about to do a gun run on your roof top.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I really appreciate it, and I accept what awaits in the online world. I know frustration abounds when things don't always go right, and I am used to it in daily life dealing with people who are not always having the best day. I do what I can to make my part go as smoothly as possible, and make their day better.

I hope that I can do my part online. I just don't want to be a team killer, by accident of course. I actually joined a clan of older players playing Battlefield 3, but They rolled over the opposition so hard that I was having trouble leveling up, so I started playing more randoms. I just hated how half the squad ran off to fly jet and helicopters, leaving two guys on the ground to try and play the objectives. That is one of the elements that attracted me to Project Reality. I won't feel like I am alone.

I am going to read through, and study the manual again, since I pretty much fast read the manual to play Co-op looking for certain information to understand what was going on, and I know that I need to know as much as possible to help a squad in the online world.

My interest is in keeping my feet on the ground as an infantry man. I never cared for sniping, flying or running armor. That might change when bullets are flying from everywhere and I just can't see though, and I wish I had some armor to hide in.

although It is very important to study the manual and also a bit to try out coop just to get the hang of things, don't be afraid or hold onto joining a server and a squad and asking for some help or just trying to keep up there.
That is where you will get the best experience and get hooked in.

ETA on that headset? I appreciate you wanting to become good at the game now by reading the manual and doing coop. I advise you to get that headset and meet up, as soon as you can. So you dont have to play alone so much.

Its much better to learn the game from a rifleman on the ground in a proper game, than on coop. And I dont want you to lose that experience.

You WILL make team kills, it's harder than ever in PR to avoid team kills since you have to check the uniform of the enemy to be 100% sure he isn't friendly. Even the experienced ones get a tk once in a while. Just make sure to quickly type in a "sorry" and get a medic to the guy if possible to repair the damage. I sometimes eat a bullet instead of shooting though if i'm not 100% sure.

Also there is no link between BF3 and BF2 PR. BF3 is an arcade game compared to this, so if you stick around you will be amazed.

If you get in a good squad you will be able to take down a lot of enemy's even though you are total new since the enemy won't even know what hit them before they are dead.

A bug with black-screen not appearing for some players makes this unreliable atm, which is related to some people being revived with full health and no blood-screen. Mr. Python is having an off day I think

Headset is in hand, Logitech Stereo Headset H150, and just waiting to go online. Wife bought it for me Sunday. Guess I was good enough to warrant a gift. I have been working with them to try and get the best sound profile. I set them to generic, and they sounded like I was running through an empty airplane hanger with boots on.

I am very impressed by the videos I have been watching, and this game already makes me want to build a new computer so I can turn the graphics all the way up. Maybe by Christmas that will happen.

I appreciate the words of encouragement, and I hope that I can add something to the online atmosphere. As a player, i don't mind being a supporting player, working for the better of the team, doing what needs to be done, and I hope that attitude makes for an easier transition to PR.

I also need to thank all the people who worked on this project. It totally looks like a labor of love.

Hello Malone. This is exactly what is needed in PR and you should feel yourself pretty comfortable and at home at this game, from the sounds of it!

One thing though, regarding the question of what is to be expected from you:

That totally differs obviously from SquadLeader to SquadLeader, depends strongly on their mood, etc.

If you happen to play in my squad one day and I get the impression that you are listening and trying, I will still rage and steam like a locomotive if you fail but if you stick through, I will teach you a lot meanwhile! And I know many good SLs that have a similar approach to the "new player"-phenomenon.

Do not take it the wrong way! Emotions tend to go high in this game (with some people at least) which only speaks for the quality and the immersion of this game imo.

This is the Internet-Military afterall...as someone coined the term way before me
