Tips for Better Performance

Post by Arab »

Here is my tips:

-Run PR in Windowed Mode, then control-alt-delete, right click on PR, Maximize to get full-screen. Make sure you auto-hide the taskbar when doing this otherwise you won't be able to access the stuff on the bottom

-Run PR on Low.

-Disable useless services you don't need. Refer to Blackviper Service Configurations: ? Service Configurations

For me, I disable Indexing and use a program called 'Everything' that I use for searching things. It has a feature to also exclude files from being searched, but if you are concerned with privacy (Porn etc), then create a seperate user account, password it.

I also disable Windows 7 Media Player Network Sharing Service, and Bonjour for iTunes.

-Remove some features using Add/Remove that you don't need.

-Run CCleaner's Registry Cleaner (Make sure that the backup option is selected on the CCleaner)

-MSConfig to disable un-needed startup items. Again, google search each one.

-Optimize computer to run for best performance. This option disables the bells and whistle visual theme though. This information by Microsoft Officially explains how to optimize:
Optimize Windows for better performance - Microsoft Windows Help

-Install CleanMem, which automatically optimizes ram

-Move the Pagefile to another drive if the drive you are running is slow (May help)

Warnings:
-Most Ram Optimizers are junk
-Do not erase the Pagefile.
-Do everything slowly, and research before you do any actions.

I would like to disagree with you on running PR in windowed mode, because running it in windowed mode could cause your computer to treat it as just another application instead of a 3D application. Additionally, some objects might not render properly while playing in windowed mode (e.g.transparent ground). However, you will see faster alt-tabbing while playing PR.

I would also recommend CCleaner, it's the only legit disk cleanup and registry management application.

Open task manager, rightclick on pr.exe, run it as high priority.

FPS gain, when compared to running everything on max, was 10 FPS. Might help to some, but really, there's something wrong with PR.

Well, you need to have an .exe to run as high priority, don't you? :p

I am afraid, if they wouldn't work, noone would be programming nor using them.

It's a pain to search and delete certain entries in the registry manually, a reg cleaner is a gift of heaven, when rightly used. At my work as a System Engineer it saved me alot of time already.

I have moved my pagefile off the C drive since I'm using a SSD drive with limited space. No harm done in that since I never use my pagefile and only keep it for stability reasons. You should never completely remove your page-file though as windows might crash unexpected, and don't use a removable drive for the page-file.

Well, there's not much solutions out there for some bugs that are getting fixed and further optimizations at the expected timeframe of a week or two. It makes things actually smooth for once. The objects that don't render means less things to calculate, and in-fact, this mode can be used to find out what's slowing things, like the U.S Refuel Station in Fallujah West for example.

Yeah, I meant not remove your pagefile, but moving it from the C drive and knowing what you are doing in general is okay obviously.

Well, yeah. Obviously don't trust ones like Registry Mechanic. CCleaner's registry cleaner is good enough since you can easily make backups and revert.

IMO disabling the Windows page file (virtual memory) is about the biggest and easiest performance increase one can make to a system for free. It's been my experience that Windows has always had a nasty habit of using the page file at all times when enabled, irrespective of the amount of free system RAM available. This would often lead to slowed response from applications/ the system as data is moved to/from hdd, especially after coming out of memory-hungry applications like games.

Honestly, I haven't run with one enabled since about Windows 98, for the most part. Just be sure that if you do it, you have enough system RAM installed that you don't ever use it all up, otherwise applications/processes will abruptly crash.

How do you get to display your FPS in game...it used to be in the old mumble, is it in the new mumble settings while the game is running?

I cant say I have any real FPS issues or diffs between 981 and 1.whatever even on my clunky old box. Still very playable...bar my lag/ping from Africa. Im running and old core 2 duo 7200 clocked a bit from 2.53 to 3.17Ghz on XP (which can only address 3GB of ram and an old Radeon 4850 (1GB mem). I think XP rocks for this game.
