Odd connection issues

Post by thelastvortigaunt »

Hi, all. I just installed PR on my college laptop and I'm on university WiFi. When I join a game, my ping will be absolutely fine and appropriate for my location in relation to the server's, but my character will skip around everywhere as though I was under much laggier conditions. Every now and then I'll get the "There is a problem with your connection" message and I'll freeze for around ten second and then the game will continue lagging horribly. I'm just trying to identify where along my connection the issue is. Is it my college's network or is it something I can fix myself? Cheers.

EDIT: Yep, I just tried pinging a PR server from my command prompt and I got normal latency. Definitely not a latency issue.

To test, Either post your specs, and/or try playing a local game of PR offline, make sure it's not a hardware issue.

I can only imagine the amount of traffic moving across a Uni network these days.

If you have a particularly slow hard drive, low amount of RAM, and virtual memory on the hard drive being too small, you could be seeing this type of problem.

Post your system specs and we'll rule out hardware,

You could also download and install/run Leatrix Latency Fix 3, Leatrix Latency Fix - Leatrix.com
You're not using it to fix latency, just to keep your data requests at the front of the line on the Uni network.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Processor: Intel Core i7-3630QM @2.4GHzx4
Memory: 8912MB RAM
GPU: Nvidia 650M GT
1TB HDD with >700GB free

It's definitely not an FPS issue, my specs blow the minimum requirements out of the water. The most confusing part for me is how it can appear so laggy even when my ping is so low. I'll go ahead and try the latency fix and then test single player a bit later. Thanks!

It is definitely a hardware issue.

It's your specific CPU/motherboard.

We've had this problem multiple times.

In short, Intel TurboBoost is rapidly turning on and off, causing all types of weird issues.

Here is the fix:
ConscriptVirus wrote:I'm using a Lenovo Ideapad y500 with:
i7-3630qm
nvidia GT 750m
8gb ram.

The thing that helped me the most FPS-wise is using a program called Throttlestop. if I force Turbo and turn off any throttling using that program, performance significantly increases. (make sure you monitor your temperatures. Without Throttlestop, my temps stay around 80C, but with Throttlestop it goes up to 88-90C which is still safe. PR is CPU bound (for modern hardware). Also look into gamebooster. Also, even with turbo-boost, some maps still get low fps, especially with 100 players.

Damn, that IS weird. I'll try out the fix tomorrow and let you know if it works. It just strikes me weird that a processor-based problem would give symptoms of shitty latency.

Alright, I tested out single player and had no issues while using throttlestop. In multiplayer, however, I still get the same issues. Are there specific settings on throttlestop I have to fiddle with to make it work correctly?

IDK much about throttlestop,
it is written by a guy who goes by the online nickname UncleWebb,

Here is his official guide to using throttlestop:
