My Map Suggestion - ABOT Iraq Oil Terminal

Post by Maistros »

The terminal's name is ABOT (Al Basra Oil Terminal)

This is based after the real life situation where the Navy and a Joint Task Force have been assigned to guard the Iraq based oil station at sea. It's THE cornerstone of Iraq's economy and the single most valuable terrorist target in Iraq.

My ideal setting of the map would be this. Around sunset, lights on...

Insurgents have to invade the terminal and two commercial tanker ships and the US has to defend. The US carrier is off to the south, the terminal and ships are in the middle.. and a small mainland area is on the north side. The inurgents must take boats out to the terminal. The US must land on, and secure the terminal and prevent the insurgents from taking over the terminal and occupying it heavily or even destroying it.

The terminal itself would be a realistic or as close to.. recreation of the terminal and two ships.. this would be cool because you could battle on the interior of the ships, the decks, and the oilterminal itself.

I think it would be a good mix of CQB, sniper.. and a very tactically based map. It would take a lot more skill than just lobbing grenades since there's a good chance your grenade will just fall off into the water.

You could even mix US and british kits together for this.. replace the US antitank kits, etc.. with british kits.. since obviously there's no need for ROCKETS on an OIL TERMINAL.

Also it would be cool to have a ton of explosive objects like barrels, tanks, etc.. get some largely explosive objects that could blow up if shot up enough.

...and it's based on a realistic situation and place.. as well goes well as a follow up to the Al Basra map.

Additionally, an alternative NIGHT version where the US has to invade and secure the terminal at night... with insurgents already occupying it... would be realistic since the US Navy Seals took over the terminal on the first night of the Iraq war.. in fear that it would be destroyed... hence destroying Iraq's economy and chances of rebuilding a government.

But yeah.. one at sunset where the US protects it and one at night where the US captures it.

Yes, I think that night time LB insertion maps based on trying to secure vital infrastructure would be sweet.

I've been talking with Celset, who can make pretty cool static models, and we plan on well, some space in time, making a map with the Carrier, the Cargo Ship static and the Oil Platform. But it's basically the same idea, only difference is we hadn't thought of the oil terminal, but a oil platform. Anyways, this could be a good idea and improvement for our idea.

Yeah if I recall it was the SEALs and Polish SF. Would be a cool Continuation Mode between that and Al Basrah, kinda like BF:V Did.

Man if only I knew how to get started into mapping and do something like this. Time to reserach I guess. I have a lot of ideas and enough initiative to undertake them but for now the best I can do is offer direction and ideas to those who know more about actually DOING it.

The DC map with the oil platform was pretty sweet.

This is an excellent map idea, maybe we'll see it in .5. It needs to be mapped as much as new stuff needs to be modded in for it, but this sounds like a great idea. I'll be our version of DC Oil rigs, which was an awesome map. Hell maybe we could even do spawning out of a merlin...

If they did map that you would want to keep as much stuff hollow or solid to keep lag down.

great idea

Iron gator always worked lovely for me. In fact it's got to be one of my most favored maps of all time. So that doesn't really prove anything.

Al Basrah always worked fine for me too.

At any rate, this really wouldn't involve too many statics as you can see from the photos of ABOT it's mostly long walkways and some buildings on either end.. along with some large pipes.

The ships don't have to be filled with tons of barrels and stuff. They could be decorated with lots of boxes and crates. It'd be even cooler if the crates could break... but yeah.. a ton of explosive barrels and such would be lovely. The more explosives, the more realistic.

I was working on a map similar to this.
What I had was two cargo ships floating out in the sea stacked high with containers. The insurgents get boats, drive out to the boats, throw their grappling hooks up and start the haul upwards onto the ship where they get to fight in a maze of containers.
Only problem though was that you can't throw grappling hooks from rib's. They just disappear.
It was suggested that I have a little platform on the sides of the cargo ships so that the insurgents can get on those and throw up the grappling hooks, but, uh, haven't really come up with a good way of doing this.
So it was postponed temporarily.
If anyone can come up with a good suggestion of how to get the insurgents on there, you're more than welcome to tell me.
