Your Connection to the server has been lost issue [HELP]

Post by Bascunan »

So i downloaded BF2 :P R 2-3 days ago for the first time. Last time i played was so long ago. Maybe a year and a half or so. Always loved the game. Love the Community. Gameplay is amazing and much more. But i'm getting an issue where it says your connection to the server has been lost. I'd sometimes get lucky and play for an hour or two. Then i would join the server again and get the message again within 30mins. But now sometimes it's instant when i join a server. Before i get the loading screen it instantly says your connection to the server has been lost right away. I Wish i can go back to when i can play for 2 hours lol. But i rather not deal with that period. Is there a way behind this?

I Run BF2 :P R As Admin
Punkbuster is up to date.
Firewall/Windows Defender is off

PC Specs -

Windows 8 64Bit
Intel i5 3570k @ 4.2Ghz
8GB DDR3 Ram
GTX 560 Ti 448 Cores
600W PSU
1TB HDD
2 Monitors

Please help asap thank you!

Lol.

You a lucky boy.

But What kind of router/modem you got?
Firewall settings can be an issue on most.

You can access your router/modem from typing in the IP adress.

(Mine is 10.0.0.1)

Who is your ISP?

My ISP is called Optimum (https://www.optimum.net/)

My Router is a Netgear N600 Wireless Duel Band Router

So if i access your router/modem what do i do from there. Why should i have to do anything with the router settings. I Can play everygame in the world without getting Dced.

A full written tutorial would be much appreciated :P Thanks so far with the replies for sure!

We have same ISP and I had the same router for a few years.

Let's start with the simple stuff:
You rarely get DC'ed from any other game or online streaming service (netflix or whatever)?
How do you connect your PC to your router? Wired or wireless, 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz?
Can you run this test several times: Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test and tell us the JITTER results. Anything over 3ms is bad, and over 7ms for Optimum is a line problem.

Next step is to shut down background programs, and specifically overlay programs, like TS overlay, VEnt overlay, Raptr, FRAPS, MSI Afterburner etc. Especially true if you run some background program that does pop up alerts from the system tray. If it pops up once a hour and you disconnect once and hour.

As for editing your router firmware... not alot of use from it,.. you can :

You could set up a static IP from your router to your PC.

You could disable IPv6 on your router and PC.

I don't think either will help for now.

You could also port forward all the BF2 ports, but again, should NOT be a problem on the WND3700 n600 you have.

So that seems fine right?

Also the only programs i have upp when i play and try PR is Teamspeak 3, Steam cause i launch BF2 through steam unless the new PR Launcher doesn't require Steam BF2 to be upp? And Skype.

Is it possible that my DFX Audio Enhancer can be the issue?

Right, so your OPtonline is faster than mine, like insanely faster, wtf, you have the 100Mbps Boost plan?

Is it possible that my DFX Audio Enhancer can be the issue?
yes it's possible. Disable DFX, set the PR Audio options to Software rendering, EAX Off, click apply. test.
There are ways to get it to run, but I don't have 1st hand knowledge, but others here do,... they are lurking, we'll get them to respond.

Totally shutdown TS3 and Overwolf. This is a known crash causer.
Specifically, the 64bit version of the Overwolf TS3 overlay crashes BF2 and PR and a number of older DX9 games.
The 32 bit version of TS3 DOES work , and the 32 bit Overwolf TS3 overlay does work.
But to test, shut them all off for now.

Steam overlay MUST be disabled for PR to work. Always. Steam overlay insta-crashes PR. We have no workaround for that.

Lito, I think you're troubleshooting the wrong problem. His PR is not CTDing, he's getting kicked back to the server screen, which indicates a network comms problem (either on his PC, his router, or his ISP). Your above tips would be perfect if he were getting kicked back to desktop.

Still getting this issue. I Took a 2 day break. Just joined a Server for the first time today 5mins ago and i was ingame for like 1-2mins and i get kicked back to the server list and says your connection to the server has been lost. I've never had an issue like this ages ago. Need Help plz

Edited 15mins later. Finally got into a match playing half a round. I Ran as Admin, and seems to be good for now. ill see how long i last.

Edited again alittle after. Tried another match. A Skirmish and i played for about 15mins, and got the message again. Was not expecting it. Didn't think it would happen. But it did. But atleast it wasn't instant. Run as admin helped alittle i guess.

A Firewall issue probably, does your router have a built in firewall or so?

I want to go through the entire hardware setup of your PC's internet connection.
1. exactly which motherboard? Which BIOS revision? Is it an Asus Z77?
2. Wired or wireless connection from PC to router?
3. Which mobo ethernet chipset?
4. Are we sure the CAt5/6 cables are not kinked/broken?
5. Which antivirus?
6. Which firewall? Are we sure you don't have both WIndows Firewall AND a 3rd party firewall running?
7. Which router? Netgear n600 Which firmware? Running DD-WRT?
8. Which modem? Motorola Surfboard or other?

Are you running ANY type of overlay software, like Skype, TS3, Vent, Overwolf, RAPTR, MSI Afterburner, FRAPS, etc? Any tray programs that popup overlays ?

Have you tried disabling one monitor before starting PR?

Will i get a Fix if i give you the information lol. Ill try to be specific with the info i give you.

1. Motherboard is a MSI B75MA-P45 LGA 1155 Intel B75 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS Link - MSI B75MA-P45 LGA 1155 Intel B75 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS - Newegg.com BIOS Version idk. I Kno it should be the lastest. If not something must of released recently

2. Wired

3. Onboard LAN
LAN Chipset
Realtek 8111E
Max LAN Speed
10/100/1000Mbps

4. Yes i play every other game with no problems

5. I Don't have any free or paid anti virus. Just the Windows Defender, and Windows Firewall.

6. Answered in Question 5

7. Netgear N600 WNDR3400 Fireware idk

8. I Got a ARRIS

All i got upp during playing BF2 :P R is Skype, and TS3. No Overlays like Origin, Overwolf, etc.

My ISP has recently got a huge improvement and change in the end of 2013. They got an all new website, plans, and New DVR's. I'm actually gonna be on he phone with my ISP Today during the Evening to get my new DVR Upgrade. But i doubt they have a Modem or Router upgrade. i don't think this has to do with anything.

NOTICE:
But i just looked at something on my router, and it says press button to turn on WPA Security. And its been on. Is it possible if i turn that off it might work?

8. I Got a ARRIS
We found the culprit.
Get the exact model number of the Arris, should be on the white sticker on the modem,
There is a "feature" of the Arris that allows for deep packet inspection and prioritizes packets. THe inspecting part causes BF2 and PR, (and LoL and SWTOR and WoW and many MMO type and FPS type games that stream constant high amounts of data over time) to lose enough packets that your client disconnects from the server.

I'm not sure which modems are available to you, as Cablevision is rolling out new modems for people with 100MbpsBoost plan, and if you have telephone service with Cablevision.

I'd suggest 3 things:
1. Call or IM chat with Cablevision tech support and have them test your line signal strength, and then ask them to turn off the Arris QoS and packet inspection features in the modem. (You can also Google for you exact modem model and find the directions to access the modem firmware, probably)

2. calling Cablevision to deliver, or dropping by a service center and swapping out your modem for a Motorola Surfboard or anything that isn't a Arris, IF that new modem can run at 100Mbps Boost, I'm just not sure which modems are available where you are. Cablevision is rolling out new service cabling and modems and settop boxes in Queens and Nassau and ... etc.

Arris TM802G modem
Arris TM804G modem
Arris TM822
amongst other Arris modems are just fubared for online gaming.

WPA Security is for WiFi passwords, you should be using WPA2 level of encryption at a minimum on the n600. That isn't an issue for your connection problems.

Also, this is not likely the culprit, but download and install the newest onboard LAN drivers for your Mobo, make sure you get correct one for your OS:

Did you upgrade to Win 8.1 ? If not yet, you should definitely do it, MANY many improvements vs. Win 8.

This is the official MSI BIOS website for your mobo: MSI Global ? Motherboard - B75MA-P45

You can see, but from 2012-12 an update "- Update onboard Realtek PXE ROM." Whatever that is...

And some Bios versions before that "- Update CPU Micro Code. "

And on the driver website: MSI Global ? Motherboard - B75MA-P45

there is an Intel Chipset Driver from october 2013, three months ago... ("new") and a " Realtek PCI-E Ethernet Drivers (W 8) " especially for win 8, also very "new" !

You don't need the other drivers I'd say.

And last, in the utilities: MSI Global ? Motherboard - B75MA-P45

There is a so-called " Network Genie " for "MSI mainboard with Realtek LAN chip (8111E or newer). " which is no even a month old ! !

The rest you do not need afaik.

! ! ! ! !

but wait for Lithoralis opinion on this before downloading/installing this stuff :p

Also, would be nice if you look for the sticker on your Netgear whether it says v1, v2 or version 3. (there are firmware updates from last summer, so if your router is older you might be able to update!)

Don't update the router firmware please.

The v1 n600 has a chance to brick when updating firmware. (cough, first hand experience)
If it's working now, just leave that alone while you test the modem and Realtek onboard ethernet update.

IDK about the MSI Network genie.
MSI USA ? Motherboard - B75MA-P45 32
It's probably not worth installing if not already installed.

------

In short Daniel, when troubleshooting networking issues, ADDING NEW VARIABLES IS BAD, such as updating BIOS, firmware, drivers, etc increases the complexity of the system, and causes more issues rather than pinpointing the root cause of the current issue. So generally, test bench best practices would NOT install new variables into the testing unless there is good reason.

I really don't know anything about the MSI Network Genie,

the Asus Z77 network software is terrible and causes all sorts of issues,
Asus Network iControl can kill upload speeds.

I doubt MSI's software is that bad, because it would probably have ben publicized during the peak of the MSI LGA1155 mobo sales.

Heyy i really appreciate all the feedback and help. Thank you. It deffinally has been awhile since i've been to my msi mobo drivers, and utilities download page. i got this mobo around July, and i did download and update things on day one but i didn't notice today there are so new stuff so i just gave it a try.

I Downloaded the Realtek PCI-E Ethernet Drivers, and the Intel Chipset Driver for Windows 8.1. So yeah i do have Windows 8.1 And yeah its a big difference in performance from windows 7. So there's your answer to if i have windows 8.

i Couldn't Update CPU Micro Code, and Update onboard Realtek PXE ROM for some reason cause it was giving me a excute error or something when i opened it up with winrar and started the setup.

I'm gonna go eat dinner and i hope this will work, but i doubt downloading a intel chipset driver, and Realtek PCI-E Ethernet Drivers will fix the issue i got in-game. But sometimes you can be surprised with drivers i guess. Also i downloaded the MSI Network Genie. It's like a control panel thing for network speeds. It really doens't do anything but put my computer into modes. i only downloaded it for the drivers it came with if thats how it works.

Here's a picture of what it looks like 7bf570f3007f9fd1e3c730a236e56577.png

Also about the ARRIS Modem thing. Before i moved into this house 2 and half years ago i had a ARRIS at my old house, and thats when i played BF2 :P R and i didn't have a problem then. So maybe since i got my new mobo in July and new CPU it might be the drivers/mobo. If not that idk
