[Model] Parachute (PR:WWII)

Hey, just a quick model here, but I think I will need some help deciding the optimal tris count (and detail), and also how should I go about UV unwrapping it. So here is the model so far:

Nice :)

Your photo album is locked btw before I start :p

But going off the pic you've posted, looking good so far but I think it could actually do with more sides tbh and making the edge flap things rounder :)

As for the strings, I would model each one as a 3 sided cylinder. I take it you where planning on doing them with an alpha texture or something going by your pic but even thou lots of small 3 sided cylinders will cost more tris, they only need a tiny bit of UV space that you can even stretched out, where doing it as an alpha texture is going to require a lot of UV space and then the mips are going to fade the ropes out at hardly any distance at all, where you can just get rid of the cylinder strings in the lods at the correct distance :)

As for UVs, I would probably do something like this, with possibly also having the inside sharing the outsides UV too. Might not be the be the best way but would ensure you don't have any seams etc :)

Also you may want to consider doing a modern parachute while your at it too since we could really use one to replace the vBF2 one :p
Dunno what type we would need excatly, would have to ask the MAs but something along these lines would be my guess: http://archersofokcular.com/wp-content/ ... 356945.jpg

EDIT: BTW are you thinking of doing a HP model for this? Might be worth it especially with the above kinda UV as then the distortions wont matter nearly as much as that will be mostly fixed in the baking :D

Thanks for the tips mate :)

This is what it looks like now:

chute 3 - Imgur

I cant add more sides, as the real chutes consisted from 28 segments as well, so this is how it looked like.
Right now its about 1200 tris, is that all right?
Ill probably end up doing a highpoly, because I modelled the ribbing only on the outside, and the inside of the chute is totally flat, a baked texture should be best at countering that.

EDIT: Did a quick highpoly:

What do you think?

The normals look inverted on the bottom side i think, should i keep both sides using one texture?

yeah the parachute is not used that often and only for a few seconds, doesnt worth the texture size

Hummm ye when I suggested overlapping the UVs I didn't think of normals from baking :p

Its a hard one tbh, 2x as much UV space or problem normals on the inside or no baked normals...

I'm tempted to say go for both having separate UVs with 2x as much UV space as I think it will be worth it in the end :)

Okay im going for a 2:1 UV template then

Image

If this is good then I'll bake the normals and then its all done on my side, texturing is one thing I can't do :(

PS: One more idea, what about a having this template with a 512x1024 texture for the 3p model, and for 1p model using a 1024x1024 texture for just the bottom side of the chute, so there wont be any space used up by the top side of it and it would look like this:

Humm, this depends on if a 1p model is possible for a parachute, tbh I simply don't know if it is. The vBF2 one on a quick check only has a 3p model (with only a single lod as well...)

But ye I would say do a 1p model like you said with just the inside with a large texture with no mips and a 3p texture with both and then worst comes to worst and we can't have a 1p model for it then we just delete the 1p model and its texture.
