Ghillie Suits

Post by Unarmed Civilian »

Greetings.

I'd like to discuss how vulnerable Spotters and Snipers currently may or may not be in PR.
I wonder if perhaps it isn't the time for Project Reality to have BF2 styled Ghillie Suits.

Point 1: Engine limiations
Grass is not seen after some distance. I do not believe the engine has a built-in compensation for that, like in other games the same limitation is compensated by having the terrain look a bit higher, convering a soldier and hiding him, as if he were in fact covered by grass. It's not a perfect solution but it's better than nothing. And the worse part of it is that even though your enemy can see you perfectly, you may not see him as well, because you have a ton of grass in your screen.

Point 2: Blending in
Sometimes there simply isn't any better spot than to sit on a grass covered area, next to a solid object. Enemy infantry wandering around can easily see the sniper, even if he is in some sort of low grass cover. Also applies when inside big bushes. It's possible to stay inside a large dome of leaves, but sometimes a spotter or sniper can be easily spotted due to his uniform not blending in so well with the grass. Also uncovered parts like face and arms can reveal a lot.

I'm saying this by situations that I've gone through playing PR. A russian sniper, for example, is like a lighthouse amidst some types of vegetations.

Perhaps, the spotter and sniper kits should per default(request kit + left click) continue the non-ghillie option, for urban cases, and have a alt kit (request kit + right click) with a ghillie option for open maps.

Snipers and Spotters would still continue as much as spottable to thermal vision as they are now. Ghillies would only make them proper hidden from infatry eyes. I find it too easy to spot a sniper in some cases. All you have to look for is that man shinning next to a tree, amidst a flat terrain (grass is not visible).

I don't know what sort of limitation a Ghillie suits could bring. Perhaps to speed or sprinting.
