switching gears in vehicles

Post by bjack »

Don't know if something similar has been suggested but here goes...

How about adding at least 2 shiftable gears to say tanks. Or incremental throttle would work.

Tanks accelerate so fast it's difficult to crawl along. Difficult to support/be supported by infantry. Pressing the W key over and over sucks.

Hmm yeah maybe "crouching" and "sprinting" for tanks to make them slower and faster? Would be cool!

We have plans of having two speeds for vehicles.

- Normal: slower than now so it can move together with infantry
- Fast: holding shift like a sprint, that will move the vehicle to the fastest velocity

Ok cool, I'm glad this is still coming. I thought It'd be here for .4 though :(

But hey. Btw, is the normal, slow speed, gonna have more torque? You know, since its a lower gear, to make it easier to go up hills and such?

I'm not sure that can be done.

Do they not already have analogue acceleration? Iirc if you use footpedals or analogue pad then you can drive them slower, but I may be wrong.

You decided whether just tanks will have this OR will APC, IFV get it aswell AND what about jeeps - i dotn think jeeps really need it though.

This was mentioned along time ago, thought .4 would have it. Any chance of it being in .41??

Sounds simple but then again alot of simple ideas take a sht load of work to do on the BF2 engine!

It will not be in the 0.41 release. BTW, I was the one who looked into it, but we didn't do much work on it because other stuff came first. Turns out you can only have the 'sprint' feature on Jet engines. So, that means there will have to be some clever coding to use jet engines to give the tanks a small boost, without making them take off.

The throttle system like in Red Orchestra would be cool, but I don't think that is possible with the BF2 engine.
So it's a cool idea to have at least to different speeds.
