It's bizarre
It's utterly bewildering how few BF2 players even know what a mod is or what it does. How is it possible for someone to play computer games or be a member of a game news/fan forum and be utterly ignorant of this aspect of pc gaming??? The ignorance is frightening
Players:
think a mod will overwrite their existing game and prevent them playing their original
first question is always 'is it ranked?'
ask how they install as if they have never used a piece of software in their lives
are afraid to even download the files for fear of viruses
don't know that a mod creates it's own unique directory and access short cuts
believe that a mod changes little if anything of the base game
I suppose it's something to consider when the reality mod PR team start promoting 0.41, that a huge dare I say majority of BF2 gamers have no clue what a mod is, does or means. Frightening yes but maybe it would it be in all interests to hold these gamers' hands and babysit them through the whole process in the very first news post - what the game involves, how to download as painlessly as possible (direct downloads only for these guys) and install step by step
thoughts?

I don't have a problem with new people coming to the mod in general, there are just too many kids and people who go like "let me fly i pwn in choppah"(then crash).
And when you promote PR on a level that may appeal to the majority of BF2 players then you will catch some (or alot?) people of second kind too.

I agree with skeletor.
It would help educate people as far as what to expect when they install a mod.
More players means more good players as well as noobs who may grow into good players.
It's not noobs that cause so many of the problems as it is spoiled children.
Noobs learn and then they know what we know, spoiled children cause problems no matter how much info they have.
There are lost of people who play games who aren't programmers or coders and yet can still be good players and a benefit to the PR community.

thing is, if you take in noobs you will be benefitting the whole community.
when you first play pr you realise that you really need to stay alive because dieing is such a pain in the ***. Then when you go back to vanilla you find that you 'pwn' because its like turning on god mode with the g36e, the health bar, the bullet counter, the medipack insta heal....
basically prmm actuallty turns noobs into good players imo.

I do agree that there needs to be some kind of an informational section on the website explaining Project Reality, what it is all about, how the kits work, how the vehicles work, how to install, etc........
Reason is just as $kelet0r said. The past few nights I have told at least 7 people about PR but everyone of them were too dang lazy to look up the information themselves. I know PR has a section on this website already explaining everything, but maybe for the sake of us not having to explain everything a million times, it could be easier to access. All we'd have to do is tell those inquiring minds to read it for themselves and that all the information they need is there.

I just read as much about PR while the mod was downloading...I had plenty of time anyway
So when I started, I already knew most of the basics, though I must admit that I crashed a couple of chopters at first :$
We all have to learn, and remember, we don't start out as noobs, but as newbs. Those who don't get better, or refuse to learn, become noobs.

Out of every 10 noobs that start playing the mod, you retain maybe 3 good players (or some %). So that means if we want 300 new good players, then we should be striving hard to get 1000 noobs to play this mod. It's simple math. Anyone who discourages "noobs" from joining the mod is essentially discouraging decent players from joining, because every new person starts as a "noob" to some extent.
Also, the reason why lots of BF2 people don't know about mods is, because compared to the good old games like Quake 3, BF2 is pretty noob-ish period.
