GPU 9300GE to GTX730

Post by PLODDITHANLEY »

For my wife's computer which is used for work stuff, watching movies and I would like to be able to play PR on it if mine ever dies.

Asrock G31
E8500 dual core 3.16
4Mb DDR2
9300GE which has a dodgy connection.
low power PSI iirc 300W
Atx case
Vista 32

Because of the crappy PSU and a small case I've been looking at the GT730, it's small and has the same power consumption as the present card plus it gets its power from the PCIe socket. I would like to have a VGA plug too as her screen hasn't got a DVI, but HDMI May be useful in the future, but I'd prefer not to have a mini HDMI.

This card is available in 1, 2 & 4GB one version is even in GDDR5 so would the extra VRAM or GDDR5 be worth it or not, plus there are cards with a heatsink or fan equipped. I have a choice of manufacturer: Asus, Gainward or MSI.

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia ... 27087.html

This seems to encourage the 2 GB version.

Carte graphique NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 : achat / vente Carte graphique sur ldlc.com

Due to where I live I am obliged to buy from this lot.

This card seems more than enough to run PR and even meets recommended specs for Arma 3

In my research it amazes me that power consumption drops with each new version and this card scores much higher that an old 9800 but uses much less power.

I'd appreciate any opinions from the guru's

Thanks.

This GPU is shit.

Buy a new PSU with something like 550w and get a GTX760. It is worth the money since you can use it on your next computer, a GT730 won't even run games from 3 years ago with fancy full graphics on 1080p.

Also, I suggest taking one by EVGA. I bought my EVGA GTX260 core 216 back in 2010 and it's still running great after 4 years of heavy use and lots of dust on its coolers. EVGA tends to be a bit more expensive, but it is worth the money. I am planning to get a new GPU next year since mine is getting outdated now, I am thinking about EVGA GTX860.

That GPU is shit.

Also, they are confusing the heck out of the market cause the low end GT 730 has NOTHING in common with the middle and high end models. midle and high end are similar architecture.

The high end is this:
1 GB of memory, though this is DDR5 memory. It will still run over a narrow 64-bit bus, though.

Just don't do it.

GeForce GTX 750 vs GT 730

------------------------------------------

-----------------

I also suggest a GTX 750 (very safe choice).. or GTX 750 Ti (might reboot PC under load at max CPU and GPU utilization rate, but PR never actually maxes out the GPU due to engine limits),
---------------

Quick questions
, under max strain in PR, what is your CPU utilization rate?
, how old is the PSU?

Thanks guys, wifey has never had any issues with her 9300 so that has been sufficient for her needs.
Everything I buy costs about twice as much here once the import duty and post from Europe have been added on, so to get a 760 plus a PSU will cost us over 500 euros....

My old gamers laptop which I play PR on has a 9600M which this shitty card destroys in passmark test, so already this is a quantum leap for her.

CPU barely ever goes over 10 per cent watching a film or doing a word document, never installed PR on hers, was keen to install it so me and the kid could play on a LAN if I can work out how to do that.

About the best we will get is this 640

128bits and 384 cuda cores

For general reference, nothing specific,

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more!

GT 740 will more than double the life expectancy of the PC, will last until PR finally dies out.

OK, that GT 640 is still better than the GT 730.

Honestly, for gaming, I couldn't recommend anything less than a GTX 750 Ti.

But as you've said, your location and PSU make it a challenge.

That is 500 Euros for the next 4 years, but I got what you mean. 640 is a bit better anyway.

Well after alot of thinking I've listened to you guys and moved up to a 740, really annoying how on the 730's

you have either 96 cuda cores and 124bit memory width or 384 with 64, so that's annoyed me and moved up to a 740.

Geforce 730 specs

740 specs

The 740's seem to me really close to 750 only the cuda cores from 384 to 512 changes.

I cannot go any higher, FFS I'm scaming the wife here that she needs this to watch you tube and HD films....

My final questions are the merits of more VRAM and GDDR3 v GDDR5.

Cheapest is this Gainward IGB GDDR3 at E70
If I want IGB of GDDR5 that's E80
or 2GB of GDDR5 is E90
......
but then E95 gets me a GTX750 1GB GDDR5 with all them extra cores (384-512 whatever they are anyway)

So bearing in mind we're looking for just PR with a dual core 3.16Ghz, whihc is running vist 32 thus low RAM. Am I going to notice any improvement with the VRAM stuff.

Just to remind you lot, for 6 years I've been playing PR on a laptop with dual core 2.4 and a 9600M GT so already a 730 124 is a huge jump!

So what do I NEED to stick my PR up to max on a HD monitor and no more than that!

I haven't even got any other games atall anywhere.....

OK, I've switched back to the GT 730 with the GDDR5 memory.

1. It has VGA output
2. It uses less power, will stay well within the available power of your aging PSU.
3. It should run PR at medium to medium/high settings
4. It's cheaper
5. You might be CPU bound anyway so upgrading the GPU has to be proportional.
6. It will play all your HD movies , HD Youtube, etc flawlessly , but more importantly, almost completely silently.

Please translate yourself to verify, but I think this 1GB GDDR5 is only 67Euro , VAT included, idk about shipping costs:

3DMark05 and 3DMark06 scores are the closest artificial becnhmarks to compare to PR. They measure Microsoft DirectX9.0c performance, which is what PR uses.

But I can't find any benchmarks for them cause cards are so new, and benchmark is so old.

OK Thanks for that Litoralis, when and if I order a new card for the Mrs I will get that, for the meantime I'm going to build a PR only computer from old parts as I'm sick of 20-40 fps on medium on my laptop.

Super cheap build:
Antec 550W
E8500 OC if needed
GTX 560 Ti 1GB needs 165W20A
4GB DDR2

That should manage PR on HD shouldn't it?

I can get a Q8200 but it's not free and seems pointless for PR?

Interesting thread GT730 v GT630, but its so hard with Nvidias numbers and spec systems.

TR Forums ? View topic - Nvidia's low end card variants

His was the kepler 384 cores version I think ie the best 630.

Have low powered psu?

Get 750ti.

750ti(or R7 265) + Pentium g3258(overclocked to 4.5ghz) will run PR without problem at above 60fps.

GPU under $100 is generally worthless as upgrade.
