A simple question about Mumble..

Post by BeerHunter »

I've been playing around in SP and reading the manual in my spare time to get the hang of the game before trying it online.

One thing I'm wondering about Mumble though is..when you select a channel to speak on , do you stay in that channel until you select another or do you have to select the channel each time you want to chat.

I'm assuming you stay on the selected channel but wanted to confirm this.

I think you are mixing up the concept of the transmission channel and the server channel.

When you join a server you get switched to the correct mumble server and (mumble server)channel automatically, you don't need to worry about anything. This happens in the background, most of the times you won't even notice and for you as a player, it's not even relevant that we're using mumble in the background.

The (server)channels are set up in a way to provide you with different transmission channels, in case you're a squadmember: squad and local speech. If you press H you talk to the teammates around you, if you press Num0 you talk to your squadmembers. You can switch between these two modes whenever you like but you'll always be able to receive messages from both (transmission)channels.

So just forget about mumble, don't think of it as a seperate voice communication tool.
Just imagine there is an integrated VOIP solution that allows you to talk to your squadmembers and teammates.

Hope I cleared things up, it's not that easy to explain...considering the way you misunderstood it, sorry :D

OK .. now I get it. I thought you selected the channel with those keys and could assign another push to talk button but , if I understand correctly now , you select the channel (local , squad) which is basically your push to talk button for that channel then chat.

Txs for clearing that up.

Well about 7 years ago my WiFi ISP went downhill and everytime I tried to play virtually any online game I was warping all over the place so gave it up. Live in a rural area so there were no other options. A few years ago I did discover an ISP with a decent connection but by then had lost BF2 and it was still required so I didn't bother.

Now it's stand alone so I loaded it up and it's NOTHING (well very little) like what I was used to playing so it's a new learning process for me..so THERE!!

I can share your pain I moved country and my first ISP made it impossible to play, on searching local gamer forums I found only 1 of the 5 ISP's here is able to maintain a steady ping 24/24, all the others become unplayable with wildly fluctuating pings during the peak hours evening time.
