So in new patch v1.4 all HMG have increased damage and got splash. With this changes Mi-8 trans heli gets very, very OP.
Every day on servers I see "flying tanks" with pilot and 1 gunner on side HMG beating the shit out of all infantry doing dead-dead in 2 bullets instead of transporting supplies and infantry to the front. This guys can have more kills than regular CAS like Mi28 in a round.
More OP adds the tankability of Mi8 and some bugs I think when you cant knock down this heli with hand-AA in close range where this ******** always flying over infantry. Rocket just flying straight regardless of locking or not.
This issue turns Project Reality into the old days Battlefield2 meaningless killwanking so I think this should be FIXED

Re: Mi-8 heli OP with new HMG damage and splash
There's no new HMG's in this patch for mi-8, dunno where you got that clue.
12.7 MG's been always deadly and killing infantry with direct hits as supposed, while it's splash damage is only 2, doubt that you'll get a kill with just splash without direct hits.
AA retardness is other issue and not mi-8 specific.
Although i have to mention that on helo i more fear lats rather than AA's

Re: Mi-8 heli OP with new HMG damage and splash
I don't recall Mi-8 very well, I must've mixed it up with an Mi-17/cow that we see often with RU/MEC. While an experienced pilot and crew on a transport helicopter can accomplish CAS, there's no way in hell an Mi-28(dedicated CAS gunship) would be outpreformed by them.R.Reiter wrote:So in new patch v1.4 all HMG have increased damage and got splash. As infantry I often look up to transport helicopters, as their respawn timer(yes this is a factor believe it or not) is lower, they can be used for more dangerous missions(again this is at the pilot's descretion.) The guns on the sides of helicopters are 90% of the time for defence, however when you have AO's that don't have dedicated CAS support, and are provided with a helicopter that has mediocre weapons, you generally use them when they're avaliable. I'll upload a video to show you(this one is OP Archer INS) how versatile a transport helicopter with decent weapons can be. It can accomplish the roles of transportation, logistics, paradrop, fire support, and a little bit more without sacrificing it's role.
At the end of the day, it comes down to the pilot, as he/she has the choice of deciding what is priorty and what isn't. In my book, it is trans>logistics/CAS>paradrop. You'll see in the video that when no one needs supplies or transportation, it can be used to disrupt enemy lines and provide recon for your team.(and when needed, such as the ambush, it can provide support as it's the quickest QRF in 4KM maps.
Back to your post, no I don't think that the role is overrun by kill-drooling psychopaths who are better than gunship pilots. Very rarely will we see someone like that, but when we do, it'll probably be good to tell them they're doing something wrong.

Main problem is you cant blow up this circling tank-heli becuse of AA missile flies right through it. No matter you locking heli or not, no matter heli drops thermal flares or not.
And again problem is ability of kill-wanking so pilots take helis to do this CAS-COWs instead of doing proper gameplay.
Check vid and this situation repeated again and again in one round.
4:00 and 4:30 timecodes

If it would be 100% misses all the time, i would agree with you, but here i'm just seeing cow blocking LOS by hotel on first shot(and you may notice that pilot started dropping flares and turning to cover before shot, he knew what he's doing and where you are), and little desync with missile actually going near but not into heli, hardly we can do anything about that as it's how engine works(although we tried some hacking related to explosion triggers)R.Reiter wrote:Main problem is you cant blow up this circling tank-heli becuse of AA missile flies right through it. And I don't understand why this helicopter has side guns. This is a misconception compared with real Mi17

Re: Mi-8 heli OP with new HMG damage and splash
Aaand... another ridicolous nerf thread.
It is like you people constantly need the devs to nerf different things that are a total non issue and noone complained about in years, to somehow appease you crybabies.
Armour update is one thing but the other recent threads?
Let me guess, someone came and rekt you twice with transport helicopter and you tried to shoot him down but missed. From that one incident you conclude that trans helos must be nerfed, of course!
The way you paint it there are transport helos flying around everywhere dominating the battlefield, haha.
More score than regular cas you say? LOL
That's what happens if nerf fanatics get their way and the devs start listening to them, they just get encouraged to complain more about the weirdest stuff and then you get ridiculous claims like this one.
The 'evidence' presented is always highly situational and cherry picked of course to fit the nerf fanatics agenda.
I encourage you to play the latest battlefield games, their devs are highly specialized in nerfing.
As soon a few people complain something is op they nerf it, the end result is a bland game where nothing stands out and heavy machine guns need multiple hits on infantry to be effective, and bombs have the blast radius of a hand grenade. I think that is what you people probably want PR to become.
One of the best examples of this craze is when a few vocal people complained about TOWs being too OP against infantry, so the devs removed magnification on all the TOWs.
Of course there was no problem in the first place, people just liked to complain about one or two incidents when their squad got wiped by a TOW, so about nothing of substance.
Later the devs brought back the magnification for TOWs and noone complained, because it was a non issue from the start and there was no reason to listen to it in the first place. All it did make TOWs look ridicolously unauthentic and almost useless at engaging armour at long ranges, just because of a few vocal complainers.
Now it is the other way around and TOWs are not effective enough apparently.
I know this is a loaded rant but i think it must be said, this thread just proves it, transport helos OP?! WTF is this.
If all those people had their way the game would become really bland fast, soon there would be no weapon that is effective anymore because it would be 'too op', the opponent has to have always a chance to fire back even when shot at first and so on.
That's why the new battlefield titles are the way they are, aimed to please all the butthurts that are not capable of adapting and finding a strategy to counter the 'OP weapon'.
I rarely see transport fly around and do CAS, yes it can be effective depending on the situation, but it is easily, very easily counterable by heavy machine guns, AT and AA, even LMGs.

Re: Mi-8 heli OP with new HMG damage and splash
There's a simple solution to this now, since helicopters are weaker against infantry weapons: sustained AR fire.
Doesn't take long to make a heli go away.
