Emplacement icons

Post by chrisweb89 »

This is in reference to the manable emplacements(tows, AAs, mortars and hmgs). It would be a massive help if they had an icon on th map when they are built, for being manned and unmanned. Also unlike the vehicle icons, if they could be seen on the map from any distance that would be great too.

Too many times do you have to ask everyone in SL channel where the third tow is deployed for no one to know, and you have to get someone to go commander and randomly demolish possible old fob locations. Yes this can all be avoided by proper teamwork and communcation, and not building tows without telling anyone, but PR is 95% of the time a pub match with all kinds of different SLs barely working together. This would solve the question of where are our mortar pits, who/where a tow/AA is, and also help SLs tell there guys to man emplacements. Its not bad on open desert maps, but if you build emplacements on a forested map they can get lost pretty quickly, where as everything else is on the map giving a hint. Some may not notice because they build all their emplacements within 25m of the fob, but this would allow proper gameplay.

Real life you know where your side's heavy weapons are placed, so we should know in PR too.

not a bad idea at all.
I think the only rebuttal to the suggestion is that it's too OP having GPS(although we have infantry GPS already), the solution to that is friendly-commander icons. anyways I support it

I like, but as you said clutter is pretty problematic, because in most cases they will be built very close to the FOB or other emplacements.

Why haven't noone thought/suggested this before? It's simple and brilliant. How hard is to implement it? For a noob like me for some reason it doesn't seem as hard as making something from the scratch as one could (if possible) use the same system as crewed/non-crewed vehicles.

Smallish icons for assets and a slightly bigger one for the FOB?

Should be doable, but the engine ignores drawing on the map empty vehicles outside of view distance. Not sure if there's a variable for that.

Anyway better to see emplacements on some distance than do not see they at all

Pretty sure its not viewdistance, but some arbitrary distance.
Since vehicle icons, which these would be, dont draw on the spawn selection screen, hiding FOB markers would not be that big of an issue.

Maybe related to map size, it's different on 1/2/4 km maps

The commander could do this if he had such tools to mark the positioning of the allied mortar (icon mortar in green).
By the way, I've already suggested something similar in a forum topic.

We could just place a custom map marker on them, bit of extra work though.

The content that you see in the video is ready : Icons in good definition, scripts, Atlas02.dds updated for 1.4.11. What's missing is a python module to create the icons on the map. A good Python programmer is missing to finish the project

Is this still just a suggestion? Any action happening behind the scenes?

I think we should also add emplacements to the in-game asset list alongside vehicles and area attack.

No need to add icons, there are several reasons for this.
-The commander when clearing the assets in 90% of the cases wipes the fob because the assets is too close to the fob(he did not care if he saw friendly tow, AA ...)
-With these bookmarks, map become confusing (too many tags in one place that slows down the dynamics of the game much), count on this and the commander's addition of hostile tags
-Maybe add a label for friendly mortars, but it is difficult to delete only their own from the viewpoint of the commanders, and not to delete the fob(they're always close to each other).

In the future, a couple of icons should be added to the commander menu.
Communication between sq leaders is the most important if you want to solve unnecessary assets.

Having a tow deployed in a forested map or yamalia, can be a massive pain in the *** to find, even when you are the SL that put it there... The emplacements already show up on pr tracker, so just do the same for ingame.

Disagree with you. Who knows how to play as commander, will know how to use these icons for the best orientation of the team and define strategies.

Now if a player who does not know how to use such tools and is a bad commander, it is enough for the leaders to get him out of control.
