Computer Specs for PR

Post by RikiRude »

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
2x PC3200 512's
Samsung 120 GBs 2 mb cache
Radeon x800 GTO

I can run BF2 on all medium, no AA, at 1280x1024 res.
Get about 70 FPS is average I think.

I could probably run everything higher, but I keep it at this because I don't want Al Basrah to run completly horrible.
Proud n00b tub3r of 5 spam bots!

so as i was saying, overclocking kills your computer. Don't come whining when the firemen come in and extenguish your burning cpu -_-

Seriously, it shortens the life of your computer parts. You could say anything you want but it's the truth.

My Specs

Post by [-=IDSF=-]SykloAG »

AMD Athlon 64 AM2 3500+
4x Kingston 512MB DDR2 667Mhz (2GB)
GF-7600 256MB PCI-E 450Mhz Core, 800Mhz DRAM (GV-NX76G256D-RH)
Creative Audigy 4 soundcard
OS is Windows 2003 R2 64-bit

I run PR at 1280x1024 with everything on High, except textures and lighting which are set to medium. AA is set to 2x "Quincunx", texture filtering is 8x Anisotropic. I have not checked the frame rate, but it seems very smooth (which means >30fps) and nothing ever jumps.

I could set texture resolution to "High" and lighting (which represents the lightmap quality I think) to High as well, but all my server processes and the fact that my OS is 64-bit eat up way to much RAM, leaving about 1.25GB tops for BF2.

Windows 2003 Server R2, despite the name, is exceptional for games. I never, ever restart my PC except for hardware upgrades/system changes. Right now it has been up for several weeks and functions as a server for DNS, web, email and DB. Games work better than any version of XP I ever ran. I will never go back to XP.

Just stay away from the 64-bit version unless you have 4GB of RAM at least. Also, the driver support for the 64-bit version is terrible. I have to run my soundcard in emulation mode for DirectX as the drivers are a mess, causing random reboots (especially in BF2 and other demanding games).

AMD FX-60 Socket 939 Processor
8800 GTX 768 mb
X fi extreme sound card
4 gigs of ram 184 pin cosair
4 fans in there and I overclock 10% wont hurt anything cause it stays at 26 C in the CPU, GPU is at 44 deg C cause the card is a beast. Have vista ultiamte waiting for patches so it will be compatible with the games I have.
Run everything high even on Basra and have AA at 8x. Sweet want to get SLI and put another in there.

goto nvidia properties and set performance and quality settings to 'high performance'
TURN OFF EAX IN SOUND OPTIONS
try these gfx settings

Saitek joystick making your helicopter/jet go left and out of control? try wiggling it to calibrate it before each game. (do it while you wait for map to load on 1st game of the day)

I DO NOT SUFFER FROM MUCH GFX LAGG AT ALL!
I just get a stutter sometimes if I am being spammed by A10's on Greasy or Basrah, they pass over quickly so it isnt a problem :)

-X2 4600+AM2 [email protected]

-Zalman CNPS9500 AM2 HSF

-NZXT Zero Full Tower(Amazing Case) 9 fans, 7 120mm fans - 4 side panel, 2 rear, 1 front, 1 80mm on bottom and top (this is not including 2 fans on PSU 1 120, my CPU heatsink fan 90mm, and my video card fan.)

-Gigabyte S5 series GA-M59SLI-S5 Nvidia 590

-Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 2GbOC@916Mhz

-eVGA 7950GT512mb (8800GTS coming soon for sure)

-X-fi Platinum

-Main HDD WD Raptor74Gb 16mb cache

-Storage 2 Maxtor 200gbSATA HDD RAID0

-Kingwin Mach 1 Modular 600 watt psu

-Logitech G15 KB/ G7&G5 Mouse

-CreativeTHX 5.1 surround~~~~Samsung 20.1in. 204B LCD 1600 x 1200 (not the usual 1680 x 1050 wich is slightly less pixels)

Also, just to note. Quad Cores are completly useless for gaming right now. ;) An intel x6800 dual core outperforms any quadcore OC or not in gaming as of now. most Intel dual cores ( Core 2 Duo) outperform both of there quad cores out in games, even an OC 6300. When true quad core chips come out (wich the Kentsfields are not) and games start taking full advantage of multi core cpu's then they will be worth something other than intense 3d rendering programs and film editing.

20G's? Outlaw you lucky...broken back or not, that's just awesome.

I'd about spend 2 and a half on a comp (like you). About 15G's on a car and the rest i'd save or spend on booze or something responsible like that i suppose. :|

Screw morals, you only live once...if i get injured i'm gonna claim the shit out of it!

Anyway, as you can see by the above message i'm not exactly rich...

GeForce 6600 128Mb
God knows what my MoBo is
768 Mb RAM
70Gig HDD
Onboard Sound
AMD Athlon 3000+ XP

All on low except Geo, Effects and View distance which are max.

Haha I got all you beat.

Intel Pent. 4 at factory 2.4GHz
1gig RAM at PC2100 speed (the most my motherboard supports)
80gig harddrive
ATI X850 Pro

Oh wait a sec, was this a competition for the crappiest computer or the best?
Oh well. I actually planed on building a new rig when the new ATI R600 came out at the end of March (so I could compare it to 8800 GTX), and got close to $1000 in Christmas money to start on in, but ended up paying bills with the money.

I actually have to get a new system soon. Am working on a mod for Crysis, and it needs a newish computer to run. I really need a DX10 card so I can see all the bells and whistles.
http://www.obsidianedge.net/

I run just about everything on low, with view distance at 100, and some rounds run smooth, some don't, even on the same map.

I do have a 15mbps internet connection though, so at least I can cruise the PR forums really fast. :(

Are you an expert?

Overclocking is perfectly OK if you research your material. In order to get a stable overclock your heat has to be in check so no fires can result. The only way I can see fires start is from trying overclock on a 250W power supply on some discount PC. There is a chance of shortened CPU life with overclocking but this is minimal. Rather than last 10 years of powered CPU time your chip might only last 5. Unless this computer is for your grandmother who will never need an upgrade (or an overclock for that matter) this is not an issue.

Why overclock? To save a lot of money (typically several hundred dollars) and to get better performance without upgrading your chip. (see save money)

Risks? If you are not careful and crank your CPU voltage without moving incrementally and testing you could possible blow your CPU and/or your motherboard.

Specs:
AMD64 3000+ clocked at 2.4GHz (~3800)
2GB OCZ RAM
DFI Lanparty Ultra-D motherboard
6600GT 128MB PCIe GPU
1/2TB of SATA HDDs
Dual 19" monitors <- a computer must expecially for gaming (xfire, TS, Vent, etc)

yeah I was about to quote his second post claiming he knows everything about OC dangers. Wich he obviously doesnt as he was completly wrong. OC is perfectly fine AS LONG AS YOU DO IT RIGHT. It will cut the expected lifespan of a cpu from 10 years to about 5, depeneding on how much you OC beyond stock, but by then you better have a new CPU if not whole new computer.

@wooly-back-jack
Obsidian Edge is a tac-shooter with the same intentions as PR.
To take a vanilla FPS game and turn it into something more realistic and tactical.
We got a start with Obsidian Edge 1 Mod for FarCry, and now Crytek is giving us support for Obsidian Edge 2, running off Cryengine 2 and Crysis, though this one will be more toward the full mod level.
And hell no there won't be any aliens or monsters. But this is a discussion for the Off-Topic section.
Now back to the story.....................................
