Human Controlled UAV

Now, we all know the UAV Commander tool was removed because it was pretty unrealistic and totally ruined any stealth tactics players like me and many others would like to employ, at least for vanilla, in PR, we can use them :D

But, the need for either the commander to zoom in and call out targets to Squad Leaders seems too constricting, and if the commander or the server doesn't have / doesn't allow VoIP, you're screwed for Birds Eye Recon that doesn't put a Sniper, Marksman, HAT, Spec Ops, AP rifleman, or Officer at risk for getting a bullet in his Binoculars. And even then, they need to get high enough to do it.

So, what I'm suggesting is this, some Americans may have an idea if they've seen the Army Commercials: Remote Controlled UAV. I forgot the name of the one they used, nor have I seen the commercial recently, written down the name, or had any luck finding the video on the Army site or info on that video; that and I haven't had any luck on finding any of this class of "Radio Controlled Air Plane with a Camera on it" that are in military service, but the idea is simple enough to be realistic, right?

My original idea was that it'd be a Request Kit (with restrictions similar to the Support kit's Numbers) that'd use a model similar to the AT, only with the Tube replaced with the UAV folded up. But the problem soon came up, how to pilot it?

Ideas to solve this are far and few, and I still can't think of anything that'd be effective in the means of a kit. But, if possible, making it a commander toy look-a-like back the at teams base that'd be based off of real world forward UAV launching platforms that'd have a player get into a fixed light vehicle control station, press a button, and launch the UAV which would work like a standard Air Plane only with a much lower speed and much lower required speed for it to stay in air.
Iunno, never tried modding BF2.

But then the problem arises that it if it was destroyed, would the player be killed, defeating the purpose of Unmanned Ariel Vehicle?

But, aside from the technical aspect, here's what I'd like to see when it is used.
1. Revive the Scan that the Vanilla UAV had, only shrink it to a 10-20 meter radius so the player using it could simply fly it over and enemy he saw but was unable to aim lower enough to Q + Click Spot him. But with it being so small, someone wouldn't be able to fly past an area and reveal an entire enemy Team in less than a few seconds. Also, like vanilla, the Radar style sweep would also be in effect, meaning the sweep bar would have to have gone over a target AND would only leave a temporarily mark so not to have a UAV fly though a city and mark every guy for the next few minutes.

2. Low required flight speed. Make it so this thing can't out run a Helicopter, but also unable to hover. And it'd be more useful if this thing ran slower since then you could spot enemies easier.

3. Able to be shot down by standard bullets. But make this a bit more powerful so one guy with a rifle can't spray a quick second and put this thing out of commission, nullifying it's effectiveness. But maybe 60 or so direct hits so it does leave the pilot some time to bug out before "click click click" of bullets then "BOOM" of it being shot down. Too small for MANPADs.

And that's it, what do you think?

If the UAV is to be brought back, it should be made instead of pinpointing where the enemy is, if would just have a red smudge(like on the scan feature for the commanders in vbf2) There should be also other ways to nerf it as well.

I like your idea. But don't give it vanilla UAV abilities. Instead make it a pilot/gunner type system. The pilot pilots, and the "gunner" has the attack helo's zoom-in function, but no weapons. He can Q-spot guys.

That would be much more realistic. And it could then be used for patrols as well as squad support.

maybe only the comander can fly it

in FH when you use some binoculars , you spawn inside of a plane that you can control (only left/right direction ) ,and if the plane is destroyed , the player dont die

Bring it on!

Would be great to see a UAV that could fly at 400m and provide a video stream back to the UAV trailer where the commander was sitting. The UAV is controlled like a slow prop-based UAV would be. Only way to shoot it down would be with the cannon of an enemy aircraft as it uses stealth materials and has a tiny radar cross-section.

Israel just started using a new locally-developed UAV that can stay up for more 48 hours....

Btw, looks like the USMC troops in Iraq will be driving Israeli made armored vehicles soon:
DEBKAfile Reports: Israel’s Rafael wins contract to supply 60 new Golan multipurpose armored vehicles to US Marine Corps in Iraq

Maybe they should be added to Al-Basrah... :m1helmet:

Ah... National pride :goodvibes

Human controleld UAV's? I know, lets get the rubber bands and maskign tape and just strap a poor ******* to the underside of one with a Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro and hope he can guide is in? Well, that's of course if he has configured the joystick right. :)

Liek when you jump in a helo and want to go up, you start spinning and land on the roof :)

Actually i forget the name (Dragon something) but there is a mini sized UAV now issued to USMC units that is launched via a large rubber band in the field and can fly around for like an hour (piloted by someone on ground near it) for recon

Dragon ladies?

Anyway, if anyone posts a thread about Fastropes, UAVs, M4s or anything else over suggested, im gonna go through the list and ban every single person i can... Hold me.

You could do an "Unmanned UAV" like this: Put like a desk and computer screen in a map, right next to a new UAV plane model on the ground. Then you walk up to the desk/uav plane thing and "Enter" the chair at the desk which gives you a view of only the screen showing "the video from the UAV plane".

But actually the guy has gotten "into" the UAV plane which has only 1 view which is similar to the chopper gunner missile view. Now for the model of the guy you just have to figure out some way to make him invisible so you don't see a guy sticking out of a small UAV that is flying around.

Then if the UAV is destroyed, the guy would die - which, doesn't make a ton of sense, but, actually he didn't "die" he just got penalized for losing the UAV plane, and he's not "respawning" he's just waiting for a delay while his character walks from the UAV computer desk over to the spawn area :p

So the only other drawback is that the guy would disappear when he "enters" the computer desk chair (but you could put the computer inside a solid small room, kind of like the .. uh UAV trailer :p ). Also, you would make it so the guy cannot exit the UAV plane ever. So his only way out is to crash it and respawn himself, or for it to be shot down. This UAV would not have magical people radar like vBF2, it would just work like a real uav with a camera in it.

And this could be a perfect system if the devs could know how to make it so that when you exit a vehicle, no matter where you are in a map, it warps you to stand right outside the UAV trailer. Then the UAV would crash and burn, just like it would in real life if you left it's controls, or the person could land it before getting out of the uav trailer.

*Holds*

As for a squad based UAV, it doesn't seem like a good idea. It's up to the commander to prioritise which squad needs the UAV and then relay informaion. It's encouraging teamwork.

It'd be good if the UAV trailer was a vehicle with a commander kit requirement that let you launch a remote operated uav from which he had to manually Q spot enemies.
