Tanks are 1-shot killed WAY too easily...

Post by Wolfe »

Playing Ejod on the U.S. side, my abrams was 1-shot killed (from the front) 4 times in a row. The final time was in the western hills with a squad covering me, so I know there was nobody behind or to the sides. No sooner did I peek over the side to see below when WHAM ... 1 shot killed. This has happened before too.

How is this possible? Do tanks have a magic sweet spot? Is this a hit detection flaw, or are heavy AT rounds that powerful?

The Eryx can almost penetrate a meter of reactive armour and 2,5 meters of concrete...

its very common in real life for tanks to be taken out by 1 good shot. you should be very lucky if you suffer a direct hit from a tank round or AT round in real life and survie.

This is perfectly realistic in RL. Conventional 120MM sabot KE rounds can penetrate roughly 800mm-900(tungsten) -1000mm( Depleted uranium) of Rolled homogeneous armour at moderate ranges 1000m. However I do not ever recall being destroyed with 1 hit from anything in PR, in a M1A2 MBT.

RL yes, how about PR life, I can't find it now but I thought one of the .5 changes was toughen up the tanks. Was that only against light AT ?
And also I second the question of are there still sweet spots on the front of the Abrams ? as I have been 1SK'd on Ejod too. Or don't you don't stand a chance agaisnt a single Heavy AT or Enemy tank hit ?
Thanks.

I've never seen this happen.

I had something weird happen to me with an Heavy AT round. I shot 3 rounds to the front/top of the tank from a hill and barely made any damage. Then I shot one round to the back area, on the top right behind the turret and took the tank out. From now on I always try and aim for that area.

Reality would say that the HAT weapons modelled in game would have a good probability of disabling or causing a catastrophic failure against an MBT with a hit anywhere.

Gameplay says that we have made the tanks artificially tough from the front and sides so the only way to be one shot killed is to the top / rear.

I don't think you were one shotted with an HAT weapon to the direct front in a tank at 100% function. We'll test it (again) during v0.6 dev but I would think you were hit to the top / rear.

Ah so the top counts as, or is as weak as, the back of the tank?

I can vouch for this. On ejod desert today my abrams was destroyed at full health by a T90, who i had hit from the side 2. He nailed me front and killed me, 3 different times. i also had others to confirm my hits were made on him.

what about tread damage. its easy to hit the tread from the very front of the tank, in vbf2 you could 2shot tanks from the front just by aiming at the front of the tread

i hope they add more armour to the challenger 2 like in real life... if they modelled it to the right size its gonna be HUGE and easier to hit.
The warriors and scimitars are going to be tiny and hard to hit.

you can distroy (in flames) an abrams in 1 hit with t-90 sabot, by hitting the tank 2 times with 1 round. If the abrams is pointing down hill, you fire the t-90 round to the place where the driver sits IRL at the front do its damage, and if you fire at the right angle the round will bounce up and hit the tank again on the turret, i think at least this is how it was in vanilla. if the round bounces up and hits the turret armour it will cause the tank to flame up. But if it hits the weakest point at the base of the main barrel it will explode in 1 hit. Only done that in vanilla though, i dont use tanks much in PR so ive only seen tanks to flaming not 1hits.( except chinese tanks i think you cant 1hit them with AT, on the rear side track) If the devs know the current damage numbers for T90 and the HP values for abrams, that would let you know if 1 shot kill is possible based on a double hit.

Did you use sabot or heat rounds?

Sabot is meant to be used against all armored targets. Heat got much larger splash radius so it works well against infarny.

yeh as has already been mentioned, there is the bouncy spot on tanks in vanilla at least where you can get off what is esentially a one hit kill

Maybe u were hit by an RPG or 2 and a tank + Heavy AT Round? I've never seen a 1 hit that many times, although the M1A2 does have that sweet spot from vanilla still I think

i meant let it sponge more damage so it can account for its other weaknesses like size and profile, i guess you'd make it slower than the other tanks too. although the BF2 engine cant simulate how it drives over rough ground.

It should be the brits secret weapon.

You cannot 1-hit kill any tank in PR with the Heavy AT. The tank either took significant damage from the terrain or was hit more than once (remember, sometimes when you get hit in a tank there is no "hit" sound...)

In VBF2 you can one-shot a tank using another tank by ricocheting the shot into the turret getting 2 hits for 1 shell. This is possible in PR, but it never destroys the tank either, it just sets it on fire. (So it could destroy the tank if it has a small amount of terrain induced damage)

Problem is, it's almost impossible to hit the sweet spot except under certain conditions and the gunner being a crack shot. Not imba imo.

We've tested this over and over and over again..... I simply cannot believe that a tank was 1-shoted at full health by anything.
