Ok, right click to zoom in on your target, you'll hear that its locking on, but don't fire yet, wait until the tone changes, I recommend you wait until after they deploy flares, when they do, aim above the chopper or jet, so it doesn't lock onto the flares. Then wait again until the tone is right and fire.

DO NOT FIRE WHEN THEY ARE DEPLOYING FLARES.

i think that 5-7 seconds is much more appropriate for lock on time.
10 seconds, too long.

I find it far easier to hit Black Hawk's and A10's than I do Cobra's for some reason.

Not that I'm complaining, I've become bloody good at taking down US air power on Al-Basrah. ;)

1/2 the time they lock on and then when you shoot them they just go straight. and im not a moron i know the difference between a recognition and a lock, and it doesnt matter if they drop flairs or not because whatever it locks on to, whether its a flair or a oil tower or plane or chopper, they just go straight and dont do anything.

It's difficult, as it should be. With time you get good at it. You have to obsessively switch back to your AK. People say this is unrealistic, but IMO firing an AA missile is not easy task IRL. So just put in the hours and learn.

Even if you don't hit your targets, you'll scare the hell out of them, and they'll be reluctant to come near you.

it locks on when you arent zoomed in. so take out your AK and have someone in your squad spot with binocs or something. then, at the right time, pull out the grail and wait for the lock. i usually fire right away. its been a while since ive gone AA, so maybe pilots have wised up.

When I run out of ammo sometimes I'll just stay at my post, locking on to things. It scares them off, and that's the important thing. And fairly often (especially choppers) they freak out and crash.

One thing I do is get the pilot used to getting locked on but never shot at. I notice that once the 'lock' is constant and they feel like it's not really a threat (..maybe the AA guy is out of range?) they tend to get sloppy and linger around you more. Just when he lets his guard down, pop him.

Yeah, that's a good tactic.

Even when the Grail is hipped, as in you do not have the sights up to your eyes, it will still begin to lock onto air targets if you point in their general direction. If you are trying to be sneaky and waiting for them to come close to you its best that you have the AK or another weapon out so that you don't accidentally give them a lock on warning when they are not close enough for a good shot.

As coolhand explained... That is the same tactic I use most often, they tend to become a lot more comfortable with hovering and staying in the general vicinity a lot longer even with the lock active. Then... BOOM! :-o
The US pilots on Devfile Al Basrah know ;-)

is it better to shoot in front of the target if it's flying away like if your leading a bullet or to shoot behind it so it chases it?

When it's flying away preferably, for the obvious reason the pilot cannot see where the rockets ploom/smoke trail came from...

It will also track it better if the target is moving away.

Is there any way to change the missiles so that they don't change targets mid flight?? I don't know AA rockets really at all but I'd assume that they aren't going to have an unlimited supply of 'fuel' to keep moving at the same speed to the next available heat signature? obviously they do switch targets or flares would be completely useless in real life, but is there a way to input a maximum range that they will achieve lock, say once they are out of view distance of their launcher? I've been on the runway at Al Basrah and someone fires a SA-7 from the industry at a helicopter that is returning to base and it drops flare, the rocket then frog leaps (best thing I could think of :D ) and hits my A-10 on the runway!! it is like it sling shots the rocket off the missed target and gains 2x the range it is supposed to have..?
