Oil Tanks, Gas Cans, and More!

Post by ekstasis »

You know those silly red "explosive barrels" seen in BF2? The ones that fly up in the air for some reason when you shoot them?

PLEASE REMOVE THE EXPLOSIONS FROM THE BARRELS... (wasn't net-screaming)

It would be WAY cooler if the barrels instead just caught on fire with, say, 4-5 shots from a rifle. But, after a few more shots, the barrel would burst into a fireball and catch the people around it on fire! That would be awesome!

Anyone else think that a barrel which spills firey oil out its holes is cooler than a jumping-banging barrel?

PS: Burning people is not fun in real life :!: Just to alleviate some people's fears that I may be insane...

Actually, MythBusters did a test to see if shooting a gas tank on a car would cause an explosion, and it proved negative... So actually a regular old gas can, if shot, probably wouldnt explode, it would have to be compressed to cause any real explosion, so something like a propane tank would go off.

I saw that Mythbusters too TacticalAdvantage! I know they wouldn't explode, Adam and Jamie shot a car's gas tank with just about every gun they had and couldn't get it to blow up. But still, I would want to see a firey burst from the gas cans rather than an explosion similar to C-4.

Sounds like they dident use any serious weapons. It only takes one spark to ignite the gas surrounding the fuel and 'BOOM'.
Did they shoot it with a minigun?

at the end they shouldve just strapped some explosives to it and cooridinated the shot with the explosive to make it worth the time of watching the show.

A fully loaded propane tank will not explode, even if you use incindiary rounds. The propane is compressed into the tank. When the bullet travels through the tank, the bullet can generate as much heat as it wants, but it doesn't matter due to the fact that the propane is compressed to the point that there is no oxygen in the tank, making it impossible to ignite it into a big explosion. Sure there will be a bit of fire, but it won't go BOOM.

Hmm so none of our guns managed to get any explosion, however ted here is an incredible shot and rekons he can pinpoint the edge of his knife on the lid threads and create that all important spark. Over to you ted...

*ping----ping-------ping* Ted says "bollocks... cant do it either!"

i saw that mythbusters episode. they ended up leaving the gas tank and seeing if taking cover behind a car door would help you in a firefight. guess what? it doesn't. the door was like swiss cheese afterwards.

reading through Black Hawk Down i remember a part where one of the soldiers realizes that the bullet proof glass was stronger than the humvees actual armor, the only way to stop a bullet from going through on of their doors was to roll down the window.

Maybe they should just reinforce the HMMWVs with bullet proof glass then...

j/k

I think a 12 gauge slug can go through bullet proof glass...
I was at this website called 'The Box o' Truth' and they were testing stuff out on stuff and stuff.

Bullet Glass are great, they can stop any small calibre rounds from pistols to SMGs, but when faced up against multiple hits from rifle ammunition, it would crumble and break eventually.
