Interactive Storyline Servers

Post by USBRooks »

I've been reading the suggestions topics, and I've noticed that you guys take special interest in the storyline, unlike the average Battlefield 2 player. I personally take great enjoyment out of knowing exactly what I'm fighting for, or the importance of the battle, like for example; is the enemy going to attack my hometown if I lose this hill, are women and children mixed into the enemy forces, or is my nation just a pawn of the PLA in this war ? It really adds to the flavor, and its one of the reasons why I downloaded Project Reality.

So far I like what I see, realistic situations and a loose storyline. I think you could spice things up though, with a simple addition. That addition is an interactive storyline server, run by players or the staff. It would be like the Battlefield 1942 campaign, where you fought the battles in order and if you won a major (or minor,) victory it would fill up the campaign status bar. You'd also lose points on that bar if you lost a battle. This had little impact on the game, but it was nice to know if you crushed the Axis powers, or just barely pulled it off. Now I'm not suggesting a simple campaign bar, what I want is a little more complex.

Basicly the server would begin on a map, the opening stages of the war. The next map you'll play will depend on the results of this battle. So if China invaded Taiwan, but was pushed into the sea by Taiwanesse forces (lol,) in a minor defeat, by the time they launched a second attack the USMC would be there in force and with the upper hand. Now let's take that same battle, and have China suffer a major defeat, as in losing their fleet, and units involved in the campaign. There would be no second landing, and the following Asian campaigns would take place on Chinese soil.

That sounds pretty specific, but its just an example. You could simply have maps that take place on Chinese soil, Allied soil, and possibly US soil. Depending on the results of these battles, certain map will be played and certain nations will be forced to surrender. I'd also suggest adding more detail to the level descriptions, with more references to previous battles and news from the homefront, possibly even a newspaper of sorts. The storyline could also effect what equipment the factions use, with a crippled army using basic weaponary and run down equipment, or an army that just entered the war and has top of the line equipment.

This all would be regulated automaticly, by the server. If you join during the final stages, you'll be fighting during the final stages. It resets after a storyline is completed, back to the "spark," or opening battle. This sounds like hard work, but it probably isn't as hard as it sounds, not if you implemented it after all the facations and battles are online.

Why exactly IS the US fighting MEC/PLA anyways?

Well, it SOUNDS cool. Not sure if it could be implemented, but I always enjoy an interactive storyline.

Aren't there tournaments which do things like this, though?

I’ve been working on a idea/suggestion to the tournament called "Tango Island" that’s basically is a interactive storyline with some new logics implemented.

Although it isn't that ready for posting I’m going to upload it soon.

Define irony. A bunch of guys playing PR year after year. A game teaching initiative as the prime mover.
However, in regard to EA, these guys never took the initiative.

I think the point USBrooks is trying to make, is that it'd be nice to have a permanently ongoing server, rather than a tournament dotted around here an there.

And for the record, I was seriously considering investing in a server to do just that (as I have a group of friends willing to chip in to the costs) but we couldn't work out a solid way of having a constantly evolving 'automatic' storyline if you understand?

Unless someone else can work it out, give me a message, and maybe we can get a server up for just this.

There are a couple of tournaments out there, where the next map depends on if you win or lose.

Don't know the names though.

From what I understand, the tournement only gives us a skelleton story.

I was actually thinking of this idea a few days ago... But what I don't understand is how will the server know which map to pick after one team wins and other team loses?

maybe through a serverside script sending a value to a database that then returns a new value telling the serverside script to load another map?

(Not a scripter so only guessing)
