Being a Commander- Thread.

Post by bud01 »

Hello

I would like to have this thread as a commander thread. Every thing about being a commander, and how best to be a better one.

Here is what I know so far from playing this posistion the other day.

[Keys]
You use V instead of B to commincate to your squad leaders only.
You press caps lock to enter your interface.

Using Voip is very much likey and is affective.
a- You can zoom the map and of course when not zoomed you can click on accept for requests.

Is there any other options or cool things you can do in this interface???

Any one able to add to this thread go right ahead.

The extra zoom enables you to track down enemy in between buildings, also more vitally to spot many rally points and vehicles from above.

When you locate RP's and armour, click on a squad to use on the left and then right click the point and select "destroy" or "mine" and use voip to announce to that squad what is at that location.

You can only fire artillery when you recieve a request for it from a Squad Leader.

Therefore you might want to click their squad when you've seen something and use voip to guide that SL to a position where he can look down and request artillery right onto that target you've spotted by right clicking on it and selecting "destroy" for example

Your team loses points if you as commander dies, so you might want to consider whether it is a good idea you going into combat where you can get shot, although sometimes in a quiet spell you might want to charge to the front and cry out over voip interesting stuff to the SL's to encourage them and their troops to charge the enemy positions and put bodies on flags to take them over to your side, then charge forwards and give them the encouragement needed.

Also, if you right click on a Squads number on the left of the commander screen, you will see an extra set of radio commands you might find interesting.

To figure out who is in who's squad, press and hold the TAB key and then right click on the screen and then left click on "SQUADS" up the top which will show everyone in what squads they belong to (and numbers in each squad) although you will only know the SL from using text/voip and asking who is leading the squad as you will not see it on either of the pages.

In the commander-screen, select a single squad and press VOIP-talk button (default "B") to communicate directly/private with the selected squad.

Try to find targets for your "designated" squads (crewmen/pilots/sabotage etc.) . Tell them that you got a new target/mission for them, then mark it properly on the strategic-map. And dont forget to thank them when completed!

As often as you can, give the order over VOIP and then on the strategic-map.

You can use shift or control to select multiple squads. I like to select multiple squads, or perhaps even all squads on the server, and give them the same waypoint for an enemy rally point or such. I then use voip to tell everyone to accept the order if they can take it out. This saves you the trouble of finding out what squads are nearby.

As with the normal capslock map, you can click on people and vehicles to find out what squad they're in. When you click on someone, their icon should get highlighted on the panel to the left. You can then talk to their SL, and hope that he's not retarded, and will indeed pass on the information. This is very useful for tanks, AT and such, when you need more precise control (as in, get your tank over here and take out that enemy APC).

Also, remember that you hear SLs, and all SLs hear you when you use the talk-to-commander key (I don't know the defaults). The commander talk key is faster than selecting individual squads, and can be used to effectively communicate with individual squads when you don't want to mess with the interface to select the appropriate squads. Remember, however, than when you answer to one SL's question with the commander talk key, all SLs hear it. Because of that, I got into a habit of repeating the question every time I have to answer one. So, if a SL asks you "Hey, commander! Is arty up yet!" my answer would be "yes, artillery is ready" instead of just "yes." It's quite easy to forget about this, and then you end up with weird half-conversations over the command channel (though individual squad channels are preferable for this).

Also, if you're a commander, don't talk all the time. Some commanders like to do that, and it's very frustrating to SLs, who need to communicate with their squadmates (and that usually takes a lot more talking than communicating with the commander). So, keep exchanges between the commander and SLs brief.

Oh yeah, that's a good point. A mission completed is a mission to thank for. It increases the players pleasure in the game and encourages teamwork. The social activity side of online gaming we all seek is part and parcel of communication and "thanks" is so easily used and so greatly appreciated.

Exactly. As a commander you want your squads to carry out your orders, and a "thank you, your squad doin a great job sl!" is an easy way to motivate them. This is even more important if you give "not-so-fun" orders like guarding/defending objects.

I'm grateful that only Squad Leaders are able to call artillery in PR, but still think the Commander's abilities are out of sync with the general game play of a FPS in that the stealth element is somewhat curtailed.

I would be extremely happy if all the commander could do was gather Intel from Squad leaders and set way points based on that Intel. I believe if this were so the squads would play more cooperatively.

I also wish we had user controlled artillery or mortars, possibly as a concession, at the request and authorization of the commander only.

Being polite helps, but try to stick to the point. Keep it short and functional, because it can be hell to focus on a tough fight, talk to the commander, -and- relay his orders to your squad.

Try and Co-Operate with players, ask for specialist squads to be formed (I'll always act as Spec Ops or an arty Spotter if asked) and spend more time co-ordinating those squads that actually listen to you.

very very pleased with the responce.

It has to be said.

1-It feels very very good to be a SL and to have a commander who seems know what he is doing and there being feedback to what you can see in front of you.

Artiliary is the ultimate reasurance, it really is devastating :-)

2-Do you think a map with two good commanders could create a stalemate?

3-The artilary reload is way to quick my opinon its like what 22seconds? Should be three minutes?

This must be how Artilary is launched from the carrier. Is there a bridge on the carrier?

There is just so much life left in PR. What we need is some really really good maps. On first inspection of the map Ejod Desert it looks boring.

What a great map Ejod Desert is, this is the map I played as Commander.

Looking forward to the weekend guys Im going to re-read this thread close to gaming night!!!

What Project reality could do with is a "World series of project reality" with teams from around the world battling for a prize pool.

If that happend I would love to be able to rewatch the battles from in game moveable cameras.

Whats the PR comminity like world wide.

Good luck guys.

Always order 1 or 2 of your squads to stay in defence of the newly captured Flag, where enemy is going to counterattack for sure.

Also, the commander doesnt always talk just to you. The problem is, that whenever he presses V (not B!), all the SLs can hear him, unless he mutes the rest of squads.

But then again, youre not able to hear a request from a SL, if his squad is muted.

Best thing to do, when commander is to yell out the squads number or name twice, so the right SL responds and rest ingore it, knowing, youre not talking to them...
